To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS LEE STUART, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Conveying Systems, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to conveying systems in which material, such as coal, is re ceived from carriers, such as railway cars or boats, and conveyed to a place for storage where itis delivered and from which it is taken for transfer either by city carts or trucks, railway cars or boats.
In one preferred embodiment of my invention the material is brought to the storage plant or yard by railway cars and boats and delivered to a receiving conveyer belt which may carry the material to boats or barges at an adj acent or distant pier. Said main conveyer belts may also, through the stackers, trimmers or deliverers be employed to load railway cars on a track adjacent the bins.
The receiving conveyors are associated with suitable track hoppers, trippers and transfer apparatus by which the material may be transferred from the supply :cars and boats to the main conveyer belts, and I also associate with the main conveyer belts reclaimers which gather material from the piles and transfer it to the main conveyer belts when needed.
My improvements are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a storage plant or yard showing how the conveyers and apparatus which I employ are arranged. F1g. 2 shows a transverse section of. a
' portion of the plant at the receiving end thereof.

All figures of the drawings are more or less diagrammatic but sufficiently illustrate the improvements herein claimed.
In Fig. 1, A'indicates tracks on which cars enter the yard and deliver to a track hopper B at the receiving end -of the yard. At this end of the yard I provide two belts C and D each of which extends entirely across the yard, one ofthem, G, projecting at one end under the track hopper and receives material therefrom. This belt C is provided with a tripper C of well known constructionwhich may be shifted on the belt and set at any desired position thereon.
The other belt D extends to a pier E and receives material from boats F alongside of the pier. The belt D is provided with a tripper F and is supplied from the boats by apparatus G of any suitable kind adapted to elevate the material from the boats and deliver it to the receivingbelt.
The trippers C and F deliver through hoppers 0, f (Fig. 4) to the main conveyer belts H, I, J, which extend from the receiving end thereof between open storage spaces onfgwhichpiles 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and'6 of the material are stored in the manner hereinafter described. i i
A stacker, trimmer or deliverer K is associated with each belt and these stackers are adapted to deliver material from the belts to the storage spaces or to the bins The stacker may be of any desired construction but briefly stated comprises a truck is (Fig. 4:) mounted to move over a track N parallel witha main conveyer belt. The main conveyer belt is provided with a loop or tripper 70 which delivers through a hop- This boom conveyer is supported on a frame 70 mounted on a turntable 7.; and the boom is raised and lowered by tackle 7a". The stacker may be moved back and forth on the mainconveyer belt so as to deliver at any desired point either to storage spaces or tothe bins M. It will be observed that-the bins M are held in an elevated position so as to provide drive-ways m beneath them so that coal carts or trucks O may enter the yard from a city confusion, large quantities of coal may be stored in the bins and when the bins are emptied they may be refilled by material received from cars X emptying into the track hopper or from boats delivering to the conveyer belts in the manner before described. When cars fail to arrive it the bins are depleted. or empty, they may be refilled by means of i-eclaimers Q which may be of any suitable construction but which gather material from the piles and deliver to the main conveyer belts so that the material may be taken from the piles to keep the bins supplied, if it is not brought to the plant by boats or cars.
A plant of somewhat similar construction to that just described is shown in my application for patent," Ser. No. 295,717 filed May 8, 1919. The reclaiming apparatus, as before stated, may be of any suitable construction. In Fig. 4 it is shown in outline and comprises a truck g mounted to travel on a track N and provided with a turntable g" to which the boom conveyer g is connected. The outer end of the boom conveyer is carried by a tractor Q3 and the boom carries agathering device 9. which delivers to a belt Q5 in turn delivering to the reclaiming conveyer belt g. The apparatus indicated in Fig. 4 issimilar to that shown more in detail in my Patent No. 1,271,627 or July 9, 1918.
Fig. 2 illustrates the track hopper and indicates how it delivers to the belt G, and Fig. 3 showsthe apparatus G for taking material from boats and delivering it to the belt D. The adjustable or movable trippers C :and F are illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3. r T
Instead of delivering to the storage spaces in the yard or tobins, thematerial may be delivered to boats R at a pier R, or the material may be delivered to cars S coming intothe yard on a track T. These cars S may be loaded by the stackers in well known ways, said stackers being supplied from the pilesof material in the yard or by material suppliedto the main conveyer belts by the receiving conveyers O and D, before mentioned. The boats R, R are supplied by a conveyer belt U, supported on an elevated structure U and providedwith a track hopper V which'may be set at any desired point to receive material from eitherone of the stackers.
. A conveying system organized in the man ner hereinbefore described is capable of handling large quantities of material received from different sources. Such material may be conveyed directly from one part of the plant where it is received to another part where it is immediately delivered to. movable carriers, or the material re- ..ceived may be piled in storage spacesfor future use or may be delivered to bins for more immediate use. It will be observed that at the receiving end of the plant pro vision is made for receiving material from either railway cars or from boats, a'a, either by land or water. At the delivery end of the yard provision is made for delivering material to storage spaces or bins and from these storage spaces or bins the material may be delivered either to city carts, to railway cars or to boats; thus provision is made for handling coal under various conditions and circumstances in the most economical way and on a verylarge scale and thismay be done by apparatus which may be perma' nently installed in the plant and which may operate under various conditions without being removed and without confusion.
The stacker shown in the accompanying drawings and hereinbefore described, is not herein claimed specifically- Certain features of construction of said stacker are claimed in my application for, Patent No. 300,978, filed May 31, 1919.; r
I claim as my invention:
1. A conveying system for receiving anddelivering material, comprising a receiving conveyer, a main conveyer belt to which it delivers, a stacker, trimmer or deliverer movable endwise over said main conveyer belt and supporting a tripper of said belt, a boom conveyer associated with said tripper, a storage space towhich the stacker delivers, a bin to which the stacker also delivers, a reclaimer for transferring material from the storage space to the mainconveyer belt, and a second receivingconveyer also delivering to said main conveyer belt.
2. A conveying system for storage yards, comprising two receiving. conveyers one of which receives material from cars and the other from boats, a mainconveyer belt to which both of said receiving conveyers -de liver, a stacker, trimmer or deliverer associated with said main conveyer belt and which is adapted to deliver to a spaceof storage or to carriers for transporting material away from the yard.
3. A conveying system for storage yards, comprising two receiving conveyers oneof which receives material from cars and the other from boats, 21 series of main conveyer belts to which said receiving conveyers deliver, storage spaces and storage bins adjacent said beltsymeans associated with the belts for transferring material therefrom to the storage spaces or bins, and reclaiming apparatus for transferring -material from storage spaces to the main conveyer belts.
4:. A conveying system *for storage yards, comprising two receiving conveyers one of which receives material from cars and the other from boats, a series of main conveyor belts to which both of said receiving conveyers deliver, apparatus associated with from to bins or storage spaces adjacent said belts, a conveyer belt at the delivery end of the yard to which said delivering apparatus also delivers, and apparatus associated with said belt for delivering material to carriers located adjacent to or distant from the plant.
5. A conveying system for receiving and delivering materials, comprising a receiving conveyer, a main conveyer belt to which it delivers, a stacker, trimmer, or deliverer movable endWise over said main conveyer belt and supporting a tripper of said belt and a boom conveyer associated with said tripper, a storage space to which the stacker delivers, a bin to which the stacker also delivers, a reclaimer for transferring material from the storage space to the main conveyer belt, a track for supporting cars to which the stacker is adapted to deliver, and a conveyer belt for carrying material to a distant point and which is adapted to receive material from said stacker.
6. A conveying system for storage yards, comprising two receiving conveyers, one of which receives material from cars and the other from boats, a series of main conveyer belts to which said receiving conveyers deliver, storage spaces and storage bins adjacent said belts, means associated with the belts for transferring material therefrom to the storage spaces or bins,'rec1aimers for gathering material from the storage spaces and delivering it to the main conveyer belts, driveways beneath the bins for carts to receive material from said bins, and a conveyer belt adjacent said bins extending to a point of delivery.
7. A conveying system for storage yards, comprising two receiving conveyers, one of which receives material from cars and the other from boats, a series of main conveyer belts to which both of said receiving conveyers deliver, apparatus associated with said main conveyer belts for delivering materialtherefrom to bins or storage spaces adjacent said belts, reclaimers for gathering material from the storage spaces and delivering it to the main conveyer belts, a conveyer belt at the delivery end of the yard extending to a pier to which said delivering apparatus delivers for supplying boats, a track for railway cars to which said delivering apparatus is also adapted to deliver, and driveways beneath the bins for city carts.
