Description
W. W. ROBINSON! STRAP TIGHTENER AND FASTENEH.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 2l. i919.
Patented Dec. 16, 1919.

UNITED sTATEs PATENT ornion.
WALLACE W. ROBINSON, 0F PORTLAND, MAINE.
STRAP TIG-HTENER AND FASTENER.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, WALLACE lV. Roi-:1N- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Strap Tighteners and Fasteners, of which the folvide means whereby the rolling up and Vpinching of the flesh under the tightener.
and fastener during the tightening operation is prevented. l
In the drawings herewith accompanying and forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device used in connection with a strap shown in position before the lever is tightened; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same after the lever is tightened; Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the base; Fig. l is a detail perspective view of the tightener lever, and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of a modification of the base.
The same reference characters indicate like `parts in the several figures.
In said drawing l is 'a base having posts 9 intermediate its ends. The base is providedl with a strap, or equivalent article, receiving opening 16 at one end. This opening may be provided with a closure 12, as shown in Fig. 3, if desired, or it may be in the form of a recess, as shown in Fig. 5. The posts are provided with holes to receive studs 8 of a tightener lever 2. The tightener lever is provided with means for the attachment of the free end of a strap 13. For this purpose it is bifurcated, as seen at 19, and has rotatably mounted therein on pivot 5 an antifriction roll 45 against which the strap registers. It also may have a toothed dog 3 pivotally mounted therein on pivot 6, which normally tends to move toward the roll 4 and to hold the strap against accidental withdrawal. The rotation of the toothed dog 3 is limited by a stop 15, so that it will always be in ready position. It may carryahand hold 7, if desired.
The base is provided with means for attachment of one end of the strap. This may be Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 21, 1919. Serial No. 298,621.
a crossV bar 11, and the end 14 of the strap,
or any article used in the tightening operaation, may be provided with an end hook 17 to engage said crossbarrll. The base may have spring arms 10 terminating in inwardly projecting beveled tongues 10, located in the path of the tightener lever when turned into tightened position, the tongues 10 being forced apart to admit said lever and hold it yieldingly in locked position.
It is noted that, when the free end ofthe strap 13 is inserted in the lever and the lever turned into tightened position, as shown in Fig. 2, the strap passes under the roll between it and the toothed dog and the tension of the strap then tends to hold the tightener lever and thus prevents the end of the base from digging into the body, this being one of the important features of the invention.
I claim zf 1. In a device of the character described, a base, and a lever pivotally attached to said base at a point spaced apart from one of 'its ends, said lever being provided witha strap adapted to engage the body to'which the device is applied at a point intermediate the end of thebase and the point of attachment of said lever to said base.
2. In a device of the character described, a base having posts intermediate its ends, a strap receiving opening at one end and spring locking arms at the other end, and a tightener lever pivotally mounted in said posts and adapted to carry one end of a strap, said lever being adapted to be turned on its bearing into locking engagements with said arms. Y
3. In a device of the character described, a base having a strap receiving opening at one end, yielding locking arms at the otherV WALLACE W. ROBINSON.
