To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EMIL DE proved bowling alley and bowling figure.

Fig. 2 is a view of the bowling figure with .its swinging arm retracted to .the farthest backward position. Fig. 3 represents the same figure with the swinging arm in the 'act of throwing the ball. Fig. 4 is a view giving details of the swinging arm and its operating mechanism.

1 is a toy bowling alley of which 2 are the ins and 3 the bowling fi ure. The bowling figure is preferably ma e of metal of sub- I stantial weight, and with the feet spaced apart and arranged so as to be firmly planted when the figure is placed upon the alley, as shown in Fig. 1. The bowling figure is movable upon the alley so that it can be ad: justed to give proper aim and direction to the ball. If desired, the figure may be held by the hand during the delivery of the ball. 4 is a swinging arm secured to and carried by a rod 5 mounted and turning in a circular opening or sleeve-.in'a plate 24 secured tov body 6 of the figure. The hand 7 of this arm is hollowed out so as to receive and hold the ball 8. In order to prevent the escape of the ball from the hand during the backward movement of the swinging arm, and in the forward movement until the right point .is reached for the ball to'be thrown from the hand, I provide a retaining device adapted normally to project slightly into the hand, and I provide means for'withdrawing such retaining device from its retaining position at the proper time. The device shown for the purpose consists of a swinging piece 9 pivoted at 10 to arm. 4, and havin a toe portion 11 which normally is held tilted to the right so as to project slightly into the hollow space of the hand.

A spring 12 pressing against the upper portion 13 of the retaining device 9, holds too 11 in this position normally. The ball 8 can be pressed into the hollow hand forcing the toe 11 upward. As shown,-the backward movement of arm 4 winds up a spring 15 secured at one end to-plate 24 at 16, and at the-other end, 17, secured to rod 5 of the swinging arm.. The amount to which this spring can be compressed-is determined 1 by a ratchet '18 piv-' oted to plate 24 at 19 and held normally toward the right, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, by the-spring 20, and a pawl 21 fast on rod 5. The ratchet 18 is provided with any desired number ofteeth 22. As. shown I have provided three.

The operation of the device is as follows:

1. In combination with a toy bowling alley and pins, a bowling figure provided with feet spaced apart, movable to any part of the alley and so arranged as to be firmly planted upon the alley and adapted to be moved into and held in position on the alley for purposes of aim, and provided with a swinging: arm adapted to carry and throw the ball, whereby the aim will be dependent upon the skill of the player, and means for retaining said swinging arm in any one of a plurality of predetermined points;

2. In combination 7 with a toy bowling alley and pins, a bowling figure having a swinging arm and hand adapted to carry and throw the ball, the combination of a retaining device adapted normally to project into the hand to prevent the escape of the ball therefrom, and means for withdrawing said device from its retaining position at the proper time in the forward movement of the swinging arm and hand, the swinging arm being provided with means for retaining it in any one of a plurality of predetermined points, to permit the discharge of the ball from the hand, said figure being movable to any part of the alley and adapted to be operated from any angle in relation to the pins.

3. In combination with a toy bowling alley and ,pins, a bowling figure having a swinging arm and hand adapted to carry and throw the ball from any one of a plurality of predetermined points-in which it may be retained, the combination of a retaining device adapted normally to project into the hand to prevent the escape of the ball therefrom, a pin projecting from the figure into the path of the swinging arm and adapted to be struck by device at the proper time in the forward movement of the swinging arm to force said retaining device out of its retaining position to permit the discharge of the ball from the hand, said figure adapted to'be placed on and operated from any position onthe board and at any angle with relation to the ins.

to enable the speed of the ball to be varied.

7. The combination of a toy bowling figure provided with a swinging arm adapted to carry and throw the ball, a spring adapted to be energized on the backward movement of the swinging arm, a ratchet provided with teeth mounted on the body of the figure, and a retaining awl mounted on the swinging arm and adPpted to engage the ratchet and to be held in its backward position by any of the teeth of the ratchet.

8. A movable toy bowling figure provided with feet spaced apart and so as to be firmly planted in any desired position upon the alley,'a swinging arm and hand pivoted on the body and adapted to carry and throw the ball, a spring mounted on the body and compressed when the swinging arm is moved backward, a catch for holding the swinging arm in its backward position adapted to be released by the player, a ratchet mounted on the body of the figure for holding the arm at a plurality of points in its backward movement so as to regulate the force of the forward swing, a hand adapted to hold the ball, a s ring-pressed stop for holding the ball in t e hand, and a in, secured to the figure and adapted to struck by said stop during the forward movement of the swm the g arm, to release the ball, whereby V p e may be placed in position on the alley to give any desired aim, and the arm, when retracted and released,
