Application filed February 19, 1919. Serial No. 278,040.
To all whom it may concern: y Be it known that I, WORTHY C. Buck'- NAM, a citizen of the United States,- and resident of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey,'have in vented a new and useful Gas" Cutting-Machine, of which the following isa specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple small, compact, and readily portable mac ine for cutting various shapes and openings in metal or for cuttingany desired or irregular course by means ofgases. The invention is specifically an improve ment upon and within the apparatus disclosed in my prior Patents 1,059,271 and 1,059,329, of April 15, 1913. The preferred embodiment of the present improvement comprises a standard bearing an arm or frame jointed for universal horizontal movement, a torch and a rotary driven magnetic tracer carried by the arm in vertical axial ceeds.

The machine has a base 1 with a pedestal or standard 2 bearing a continuation post 3. An arm section 4 of a jointed arm or frame is pivotally mounted on the post 3 by means ofa bracket piece 5. Another arm section 6 is knuckleq'ointdd at 7 to a bracket piece 6 on the end of the'section 4, the two arm sections being adapted to assume various angular relations in the operation of the machine. The free end of-the: arm section 6 carries a yoke, consistingof upper and lower castings 8 and 9. I The lower yoke portion 9 has a vertical" tubular terminal .10, constituting a holder for a cutting torch 11. of standard construction. The torch can be raised and lowered in this holder by a hand-wheel 12 operating a rack and pinion in the customlugs 18 on the yoke member 8. On the upper end of said shaft is a worm 19 engaging a worm wheel 20 on a horizontal shaft 21 journaled in a suitable bearing on the same part.
A bevel gear 22 on the opposite end of the shaft 21 meshes with a bevel gear 23 on a vertical sleeve 24, which turns about'a fixed vertical shaft 25. The, said fixed shaft .24 passes through lugs 26 and 27 of the yoke member, to the lower of which it is pinned, as indicated at 28. The sleeve 24.is

The fixed shaft 25' extends upward through said core member and is provided at its upper end with a reduced threaded extremity 30, which screws into an opening in the top of a tubularmagnet body 31, the
magnet body and the energizing coil 32 thereon being thussupported from the universally movable arm or frame and being stationary with'respect to the core member 29, which is. rotatable by the motor and gearing.
The which projects below the magnet body is formed as a knurled roller 34 to travel upon the vertical boundary or edge 35 of atemlar instance the guiding surface or edge is an internal boundary formed by anopening in the templet plate.

What I claim as new is:
1. A gas-cutting machine comprising a support, a frame supported therefrom jointed for universal movement in a plane, a downwardly-directed torch carried by the frame, and a driven tracer connected with the frame and located over thetorch.
2. A gas-cutting machine comprising, in
-. combination, a'support, a frame supported therefrom jointed for universal movementin a plane, a downwardly-directed torch carried by the frame, a templet over the torch, and mechanical feed means carried by the frame to cooperate with said templet.
3. A gas cutting machine comprising, in

7. A gas-cutting machine comprising, in
combination, a support, a jointed arm on the support, a yoke on the arm, a torch mounted in one part of the yoke, a rolling tracer mounted in the other part .of the yoke in axial alinement with the torch, a .templet, and means for driving the tracer.
8. A gas-cutting machine comprising, in combination, a carrier universally movable in a plane, a torch and a driven magnetic tracer in axial alinement in the carrier, a
'templet, and a movable switch-piece associated with the templet whereby the cutis started ofi' the true course.

combination, a carrier universally movable in a plane, a torch and a'drlven magnetic tracer in axial alinement in the carrier, a
templet, a pivoted switch-piece associated with the templet whereby the cut is started oh the true course, and an abutment for sustaining the switch-piece in the starting position, the switch-piece being adapted to be moved automatically out of the way by the tracer toward the conclusion of the cut.
