SHAKE ARRANGEMENT FOR CYLINDER PAPER-MACHINES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, .Enxnsr W. LIND- QU'IST, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Lawrence, county of Essex, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Shake Arrangements for Cylinder Paper-Machines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts in each of the several views.
This invention relates to paper machines of the cylinder type. In machines of this type as heretofore used, the wire cloth or foraminous hollow cylinder operative in the pulp vat has by its rotary movement through the pulp tended to cause the pulp fibers to arrange themselves in a direction parallel with the plane of rotation so that by far the greater part of the fibers in the paper sheet extend lengthwise thereof and comparatively few crosswise. This has resulted in making the paper strong and tough in one direction, z. e., to resist tearing across the, web, but comparatively weak to resist tearing in a' direction lengthwise of the weli. A prime object of the present invention is to provide means cooperative with the cylinder mold in the pulp vat for acting on the pulp in a manner so as'to arrange a substantial portion of the pulp fibers in a direction more or less lengthwise of the cylinder, 2'. 0., transverse of the web, thereby obtaining a crisscross arrangement of th fibers in the paper sheet and making the same of uniform strength'and toughness in all directions. To this end I provide moving elements operative .in the vat relatively close tothe cylinder periphery and provide means for reciprocating said elements constantly at amredetermined rate with respect to the cylinder rotation in the operation of the machine. A further object is to provide novel means for mounting and. operating such moving elements whereby the mounting therefor presents smooth continuous surfaces and is of a construction simple but efi'ective for the purpose in view. The foregoing and other 'ob-.
jects and advantages of the invention will 'more fully appear from the following de- -tailed description, and the distinctive features of novelty will be pointed out in the appended claims.

A pulp vat is indicated at 10 having a usual hollow wire cloth or foraminous cylinder 11 operative therein and mounted on a usual tubular shaft 12 deriving motion from the couch roll as usual and ournaled in suitable bearings 14- (not fully shown, since neither these nor the frame work of the machine are essential to an understanding of the invention). In accordance with my invention I provide .a reciprocatinm device shown as composed of three rods 15, 16, 17 spaced apart. around the periphery of the cylinder andmounted to slide lengthwise of the cylinder in bearings 18 at:the ends of the yet. The rods 15, 16, 17 are secured together for xsimultanpous operation at the back end of the machine by abar frame work 19 to. whic is pivotally connected at 20 an operating device shown as a pitman 21 pivoted at 22 to a crank pin carried by an operating shaft 23. and adjustable radially with respect thereto to vary the throw of said crank pin and hence the range of reciprocation of said device. The rods 15, 16, 17 have- .secured thereto a grid structurc,c mposed of a series of spaced apart strips o bands 24 which extend around the cylinder within the vat and in relatively close proximity to the cylinder as best seen in Fig. 3. Having described my invention, what 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: I
