I Specification of Letters Patent.
- Patented Nov. 25, 1919.
Application filed July 14, 1919. Serial No. 310,614.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VIRGINIA MOORE, a citizen of the i United States, residing at Bala, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing Accessories, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved article of manufacture, adapted for use by persons, generally ladies, when using thread, yarn, or silk, in sewing, crocheting, or the like.
It has long been realized that the average person, when sewing, crocheting, knitting, or the like, and using any of the wellknown forms of spools, balls, cones, or skeins, is troubled with the thread-holder rolling about a table, or probably often falling therefrom upon the floor, and frequently rolling into extremely inaccessible places.
This invention, therefore, has for its ob ject the provision of a suitable means for removably and rotatably supporting a spool or other carrier of thread, in combination with yielding means to removably attach the device to the clothing of the user, to the upholstering of the chair occupied by the user, or to any other suitable support, together with an eyelet through which the thread extends, and also preferably with a small fixedly positioned blade for severing the thread when the same may be desired.
In order to make this article of manufacture as cheaply as maybe possible, and toprovide for the required degree of resiliency of its several parts, it is preferred that the same be made of two sections of twisted wires, which same, though preferably of steel, to insure the greatest resiliency, may be plated with any other metal desired, in order to impart to the article the particu lar finish preferred.
With these and other objects in view, the invention comprises certain novel details of construction, operation andnse hereinafter fully brought out in the following description, when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the preferred embodi ment of the device and Fig. 2 is a side ele vation of the same.
Referring to the drawings, two strands of wire are twisted throughout a section 1, at the lowermost portion of which they separate and diverge in opposite directions, to
form similar resilient sections 2, each of which at its outermost portion bends downwardly to form parallel sections 3, and terminating in inwardly directed alined'sections 4.
By temporarily separating the oppositely disposed resilient sections 2-3- 1, any common form of spool 5, or the like, such as a cone, bobbin, or other holder, of thread,-
wardly and upwardly curved cutting member 7 provided upon its inwardly directed portion with a sharpened edge 8, across which the thread can be passed in order to sever the same from the holder below.
One of the twisted strands, at the uppermost portion of the section 1, is directed radially outwardly substantially in the plane of the sections 3-3, and is looped and twisted to form an eye 9, after which the end of this strand extends radially in the opposite direction and is curved reversely to form a hook 10.
The other of said strands, beyond the twisted section 1, extends freely upwardly and is wound upon itself approximately 140 degrees to form a resilient spiral portion 11, from which the said strand extends downwardly to form a yielding pin section 12, pointed at its free end 18, and when in operative position retained in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 by the hook 10.
In using this device, the safety-pin section is attached to any suitable portion of the clothing of the user, and the threadcontainer arranged to be supported thereby as shown in the drawings, after which the loose end of the thread, or the like, is drawn from the spool or its equivalent and extended upwardly and thence through the eyelet 9, whence it can be used continuously as in crooheting or knitting, or can be cut in sections by drawing it across the blade 8, for use in conjunction with the sewing or darning-needle.
Although the invention has been described as preferably embodying the various elementary sections illustrated, it is obvious that a very useful little device can be con structcd even With the omission of either for, depending upon the preference of the maker. I
V Having thus described my invention, What I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is An article of manufacture, comprising a plurality of strands of Wires twisted to form a shank, in combination With cutting means secured to sald shank, the end portlons of sald strands extending 1n one dlrectlon, be-
ing oppositely formed to removably sup port a thread-container, and in the opposite direction one of said strands being looped to form a safety pin section, and the other strand being looped to form an eyelet,
through which thread from the container is adapted to pass, and terminating in a hook adapted to yieldingly retain the free end of said safety pin section. .In testimony whereof I have affixedmy signature. I r
VIRGINIA MOORE.
