for use in connection with the gates of stock pens or otheranimal inclosures.
It is in general the object of my invention to simplify and otherwise improve the construction, and to increase the efficiency and readiness of manipulation of devices of this character.
It is more particularly my object to provide a latch member cooperating with a movable post and a stationary post, which is shiftably mounted on one of the posts and which directly engages the other post for holding the same without the necessity of providing a keeper or the like on said other post, release ofthe post being procured, by shifting movement of the latch member.
A further object resides in the provision of a latch member of this character which is mounted in such manner as to preventfits operation by the stock.
A still further object resides inthe provision of a latch member of this character t which may be formed of scrap pieces of channel stock, to procure a material additional feature of economy in its manufacture. 7
With the above and other objects and advantages in view,- which will be apparent as the description proceeds, myinvention resides in the novel features of construction,
combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more particularly described and Application-filed January 16,1919. SeriaLNo. 271,422.

lieferringmow more particularly to the aocompanyning drawings, 5 designates a gate r-postzan'd 6 designates -the vertical side bariof'a gate adapted to swing in either .direction'pastithe post; I My-improved latching device includes a pair ofprojections-on opposed portions of the gate ,bara6, said. projections being formed in'the: present instanceiby channel sections 17' having their .sides engaged-against the barb; and secured by a bolt 8 passed through said channel members and through the gate bar, the gate bar together with the post 5 being cylindrical in shape whereby the channel members are held against rotation on the bolt. An elongated latching bar 9 is provided which is also formed of channel iron and which has an opening 10 formed in one end portion of its bight to snugly receive the gate bar whereby the latching bar is'shiftably mounted on the gate bar and may seat on the projections 7 with its sides embracing the projections to prevent turning movement on the gate bar. The other end portion of the latching bar has its bight portion cut away to receive the gate post 5, the sides ofthe channel being curved outwardly to facilitate entrance of the gate post into the recess thus formed in the latching bar.
My latching device is thus exceedingly simple in nature. In operation, when the gate post is disposed in the recess of the channel bar and the sides of the channel bar embrace the gate bar projections 7, the gate is securely latched in a closed position. To release the gate to permit its swinging movement in either direction, the channel bar is merely lifted to clear the projections 7, and may then freely swing on the gate bar to release the post 5. Upon swinging movement of the gate to disengage the latching bar 9 from the post 5 said bar will rest on the projections 7 obliquely of the plane of the gate and thus when the gate is swung again to closed position the recess of the latching bar will automatically engage with and receive the gate post, and as the locking bar is then swung into alinement with the projections 7, it will drop over said projections to latch the gate. In lifting movement of the channel bar, the bar must be maintained in ticularly noted that this bindingtendency prevents manipulation of the latch by an animal.
' It is further noted, that the entire latchdevice may be made ofshort scrap lengths of channel iron with the elimination of any castings and thus the latch may be manufac- I tured at an exceedingly low cost.- vVhat I claim is -1. A latching devlce comprlsing the combination-with a pair of relatively; movable posts, of a projection-on one 0t said posts-,a channel bar having'one end of 1ts bight portion apertured to receive the said posts,
whereby said channelbar is pivotally and slidably mounted upon said posts, tilting movement of thechannel bar Serving tobind the bar against movement on the-post, the
otherend portion of the channel bar being recessed to receive the other post and said In testimony that; I claim the foregoing I their sides engaged against opposite portions 7 of one of .theposts, a securing bolt passed through said sections and through the post, a channel latch bar apertured' to receive the said post and provided with an open recess for receiving the other post, said channel bar sections being engaged in the channel of the r latch bar when the other post is. engaged'in the recessofthebar. e
