BUCKLE.

Speccation forming part of Letters Patent No. 13,218, dated July 10, 1855; Reissued February 3, 1874, No. 5,755.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SHELDoN S. HAR'rs- HORN, of the town of Orange, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement` in the Manufacture of Buckles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the construction, character, and operation of the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which make a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a perspective view of the buckle, complete. Fig. 2, is a perspective View of the loop to which the standing partof the strap is to be attached, and the tongues, all in one piece. Fig. 3, is a perspective view of the bow, or part through which the movable part of the strap is to be passed, and on which the ends of the tongues areA to rest.

My improvement consists in manufacturing the buckle of two pieces, which I form into their proper shape by means of dies, in any of the usual ways.

I make the loop, (A, Fig. l) to which the standing part of the strap is to be at* tached, and the tongues, and b, of one piece of wire, (the points being sharpened by any convenient means,) by bending it, (with suitable machinery,) to the proper shape to answer the double purpose of loop and tongues, as shown in Fig. 2. I make the bow, B, through which the movable part of the strap is to pass, of sheet metal, and raise it to its proper shape, as seen in Fig. 3, ready to receive the other part, (Fig. 2.). I then place the part, Fig. 2, into the partially formed sockets, a and a, Fig. 3, and set down, or close the sockets, (with any proper die,) and thus complete the buckle, when it will appear as shown in Fig. 1, and ready for use.

The advantages of my improvement consist in making a very serviceable buckle, with all the necessary strength, and yet it can be manufactured with the greatest rapidity, and the least possible expense.

What I claim as my invention and desire to secure byLet-ters Patent is The improvement in the manufacture of buckles, composed of but two pieces; when constructed, substantially, as herein described.
