'Referring now, more part'cularly, to the accompanying drawings, there is provided a gun or rifleincluding a barrel 1 to which is' attached the improved shield indicated in its entirety by the numeral 2.
In the present instance about the rifle barrel, the ends of the band terminating in spaced upright ears 4.:- for receiving a 'bolt'5 the threaded projecting terminal of which is engaged by a wing nut. 6 which servesto clamp the band in position.
The shield proper consists of a body. 7 formed of suitable metal and of a substantially semi-conical configuration at the apex of which are formed spaced ears 8 designed to be pivotally arranged about. the bolt 5,
and the body is also formed in proximity to the ears with a sight opening 9 through r which the sight on the gun is visible, As intlmated, suitable means have. been in a raised position or in a lowered position the shield com-. prises an attachingband 3 for disposition provided for releasably holding the body in close relation to the barrel and in reducing this feature of the invention to practice the body is provided on opposite sides with opposed arcuate slots 10 and also with op of spaced openings 11 and 12 which are in circumferential alincment with posed pairs the inner edge of the'slots 10 and positioned between these slots 10 and the opening 9.

Push buttons 15 are carried' the outer terminals of the spring members 13 and project in opposite direct-ion and operate in the slots while catches 16 also project from the outer faces and in opposite directions from the spring members 1:3 and are designed to be engaged with the openings 11 for releasably locking the body in a raised position or engage with the openings 12 for releasably locking the body 7 in a closed position. The spring members 13 are shaped so as to normally lie in close relation with the inner surface of the body yet are easily moved inwardly upon pressing the push buttons 15 to assure of the removal of the catches 16 from either of the openings 11 and 12 to permit the swinging of the body whereupon, owing to the inherent resiliency or these members, the catches will engage the other openings 12, as is apparent.
it is believed in view of the foregoing description that a further detailed description of the operation or" the invention is entirely unnecessary. Likewise it is believed that the advantages of the invention will also be readily apparent.
What is claimed as new is:
l. A gun shield of the character described including an annular-attaching band formed with spaced ears at its terminals, a bolt engaged in the terminals, av wing nut engage-able with the bolt for clamping the band in position, a semi-conical body having its apex pivotally arranged about the bolt and formed near its apex with a sight opening the body being also provided with opposed arcuate slots in its sides and also formed "ith openings between the slots and the sight opening, spring members connected to the ears on the band and positioned in yielding relation with the inner sur 'ace of the body, catches projecting from the spring members and engageable with either of the last mentioned openings, and push buttons projecting from the spring members and operable in the slots int-he body for removing the catches from engagement with the openings in the shield to permit of swinging of the shield to either a raised or lowered position. I
2. A device of the character described including a shield pivotally mounted at one end, the shield being formed with arcuate slots on opposite sides and with openings between the said slots and the pivot point, laterally yieldable spring members provided with catches engageable with the said openings, and push buttons carried by the spring members and passing through said arcuate slots, whereby the shield may be caused to assume (lilierent positions on the pivot in the manner and for the purpose specified.
