APPLICATION FILED MAR. 29,1911- Patented Nov. 4, 1919.
LUDWIG BACHMAN, or SAULGAU, GERMANY.
PRODUCING COLORED DECORATIONS ON PAPER ARTICLES.
amaze.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 4, 1919.
Application filed March 29, 1917. Serial No. 158,419.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LU'DWIG BACHMAN, a citizen of Germany, and a resident of Saulgau, WVurttemberg, in the German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Producing Colored Decorations on Paper Articles, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to the production of paper articles which are provided with colored decorations to render them more attractive; its object being to provide a novel method of producing colored decorations on suitable paper articles, such as bags, wrappers, or the like paper packings. My novel method enables me to produce on such paper articles colored pictures and the like decorations on a manufacturing scale in a simple manner and at a minimum cost, while the resulting decorations are of a high artistic effect which adds greatly to the attractiveness and tasteful appearance of any paper packing provided with such decora-,
tions. 1
In the accompanying drawings, I have shown one embodiment of my invention by way of example, in which Figure l is a plan view of the upper flexible transparent layer;
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the lower flexible opaque layer;
Fig. 3 shows the upper layer superimposed upon the lower;
Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view; and
Fig. 5 is 'a perspective view showing a box covered with the wrapping formed according to my invention. 7
I attain the object of my invention by a certain manner of procedure comprising a plurality of steps which by their cooperation produce the novel product. I will now describe the several steps of procedure.
I first take a layer or sheet of the paper 10 from which .the desired article is mainly to consist and on which the colored picture or the like decoration is to appear. This paper is of a material suitable for forming a wrapping for boxes or the like. Upon this layer or sheet of paper I print the desired number of different colors as at 11 destined to make the colored picture that is to be produced. The printing may be performed preferably by means of a suitable cylinder printing machine allowing of printing a plurality of different colors in one operation.
Thereupon -I take a flexible transparent layer or sheet of paper 1:2 and provide the same either with the contours or with the shadowing, or with both contours and shadowing, as at 13, of the picture of which the color portions are already printed on the lower or base paper layer or sheet., This transparent layer or sheet is then, with its edges, pasted, or otherwise secured, as at 14,
upon the base layer or sheet, for instance by means of conform dottings, in such a manner that the pictorial contours of both layers or sheets coincide exactly. Both prepared layers or sheets of paper, when thus loosely placed. one upon the other, represent the finished colored illustration, and the manner of loosely joining the layers permits of the same being wrapped around boxes or other objects as shown in Fig. 5, without breaking or stretching the transparent layer.
In the described manner, viz, by uniting two layers or sheets of paper of which the base layer is provided with the color portours of a decorative illustration printed thereon, and a base layer of flexible opaque material having the color portions of the decorative illustration printed thereon, said transparent layer being superimposed upon said base layer so as to produce a colored illustration within the contours. on said transparent layer, said transparent layer being loosely united with said base layer so as to permit conforming of said flexible wrapping to Various articles to be wrapped.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a thin flexible wrapping or cover, comprising a flexible transparent layer having the contours and shadowings of a decorative illustration printed thereon, and a base layer of flexible opaque material having the color portions of the decorative illustration printed thereon, said transparent layer being superimposed upon said base layer so as to produce a colored illustration within the con tours and shadowings on said transparent layer, said transparent layer being loosely united with said base layer so as to permit conforming of said flexible wrapping to various articles to be wrapped.
3. Asa new article of manufacture, a flexible Wrapping or cover, comprising a flexi'ble transparent layer having the contours of a decorative illustration printed thereon, and
a base layer o1 flexible opaque material having the color portions of the decorative illustration printed thereon, said transparent layer being superimposed loosely upon said base layer so as to produce a colored illustration within the contours on said transparent layer, said layers being united at their edges to maintain register of said colors Within said contours, said loose relation of said layers adapted to permit con forming of said flexible wrapping to various shapes.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
LUDWIG BACHMAN.
