T0 allwlwm it may concern:
' Be itknown that I, CHARLES K. OLsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, hav e invented certain new and useful Improvements 'in Curtain: Stretchers',
My invention relates to curtainstretchers, and has forone'of its ob ectsthe provision of a simple and etficient curtain stretcher which-is adapted to stand by itself unsupported andto hold the curtainsso to be engaged by a maximum amount of a 1 j i A furtherobject' isjthe provision of a simple and eflicientcurtain stretcher adapted for adjustment for holding various sizes of curtains, and the like.
A still further object is the provision of a curtain stretcher which may be quickly and easily folded intocompact form and be easily and quickly'erecteol for use.
Other objects will appear-hereinafter.
tratedin the accompanying drawing, "forming apart of this Specification, and in which Figure l is a plan view of a curtain stretcher embodying my"invention';" j y Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same; and V Fig. 3 is an end view of two bars disposed together as when the device is folded.
In the drawing I have illustrated my invention as being triangular in horizontal cross-section, but it willbe understood that the device may be formed in such a manner as to have as many sides as desirable. Also, it may be made of various materials. However, I find wood makes a very light and strong frame.
In the form illustrated I have indicated three-upright corner posts'5, one of which is provided with a vertical line of points 6 to which the endof a curtain, or the like, is to be fastened in using the device. The posts 5 are preferably substantially parallel and equidistant froma center line, although, if desirable, other arrangements of the posts may be had.
At each side of the device I provide a plurality of strings, cords, or other flexible members 7 which extend substantially horizontally between the adjacent edges of the posts. These strings, jor the like, may be secured to the posts in any desirable man- Specification of Letters Patent.
, manner.
.141. The points in Patented Nov. 4., 1919,
Application filed August 6, 1919. Serial no. 315,671.
nor- Also, at each side of the device I pro- .vide two strings, or other flexible elements 8 arranged crossing each other so as to serve as braces-for the device when the latter is erected for use. The strings 8 may also be secured to the posts inany desirable The side of each of the posts 5 facing the center of the device is preferably provided with a plurality of notches 9, and in certain of said notches are disposedthe ends of bars 10 arranged horizontally to provide supporting means for the side edges of the curtain, or the like. is provided with a line ofpoints 11- for engaging the curtain, or other article'to be dried onthe device. The points 11 in the upper bars 7 10' are preferablykadjacent the lower edge thereof, and the points 11 in the lowerbars 10 are preferably adjacent the upper-edges thereof so that aminimum amountof space behind the curtain, or the i H like, will'be' out ofi by such barsy -Also, An embodiment of my invention is illuswhen the device isfoldedthe bars 10 are arranged as indicated in Fig. 3 with their points 11 disposed substantially as indi cated soas to prevent-the points from'en Each of the bars 10,
like, is engaged on points 12 of an upright member 13 which may be disposed anywhere around the device against the bars 10. The bar 18 may be held against the bars 10 in any desirable manner, such as by the clamps bar 13 are preferably near one edge so that when the device is folded it can be placed so as to protect the points 6 on one of the posts 5 in a manner similar tothat indicated in Fig. 3. Extending radially from the center of the device are a plurality. of links or brace members 15 each pivoted as at 16 to one of the corner posts. The adjacent ends of the bars 15 are connected together in a suitable manner so that they can be easily and quickly swung on their pivotal points 16. I have indicated a rigid bar 17 pivoted as at 18 to each of the bars 15, but it will be apparent that the member 17 may be any other desirable connection between the adjacent ends of the bars 15. The arrangement is such that upon pressing downwardly on the bar 17 the links 15 will draw the posts up against said bar 17 when the bars 11 have beenremoved from the notches 9, and that said bars 15 and connecting members 17 will brace the posts 5 out tight against the 'strings 7 when the device is erected. A
string 19 may be provided between one of the bars and the bar 17 to limit the move- .ment of said bar in an upward direction,
thereby locking the device in the position indicated in the drawing. The top strings 7 may be connected by strings 20 with the top of member'17 so as to help draw in the top strings 7 whenthe device is to be folded, thereby helping to keep the strings from becoming snarled.
It will be apparent that the upper bars 10 may be placed in the different notches 9 at the tops. of the posts and the bar 13 arranged at different distances from the post having points 6 so as to accommodate various sizes of curtains. It will also be ap parent that the device may be utilized for,
links connecting the posts with said center member; and a plurality of flexible mem bers connecting said posts together.
2. 'A curtain stretcher comprising a plurality of upright posts disposed substantially equidistant from a center line; rigid links pressing radially from said center line on said posts; and cords fastened to the posts and limiting the movements of the latter from each other.
3. A curtain stretcher comprising a center member; a plurality or" corner posts disposed about said center member; links disposed substantially radially fromthe center member and pivotally connected with the latter and sald posts; and a plurality of flexible members connecting the posts at each vertical sideof the device, some of the flexible members being arranged to act as braces. s a c a. A curtain stretcher comprising a plurality of upright posts having a plurality of notches therein; a plurality of bars having their ends en aging saidnotches; strings connecting 118 upright posts to gether; .a center member; and links extending substantially radially from the center member and connecting the, latter and the upright posts.
5. A curtain stretchercomprising a 13111 rality of upright posts disposedsubstantially parallel; a member disposed substantially parallel and centrally of said posts; a
plurality of links connecting the posts with.
said center ,member; a plurality of cords connecting theposts together; and a flexible member connected with one or" the links and said center member limiting the swinging of the linksin one direction. l i
Intestimony whereofl have signed my name to this specification on this 2nd day of August, A. D.;'1919.
