As the primary aim and object this invention contemplates the provision of a device of the above mentioned character wherein the %Ld]0l1l111g811(.l$ of rail sections are designed for engagement with each other in such a manner as to sustain the weight of rolling stock as. it passes over the joint between the sections.
More particularly, this invention includes the provision of a device of the above mentioned character wherein the meeting ends are designed so that when in engagement with each other they will be prevented from being depressed when rolling, stock passes thereover and incidentally are designed so as to be prevented from lateral movement with respect to each other.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
Changes, variations and modifications may be made in the invention such as come properly within the scope of the appended claim without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing-any of its advantages.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

accompanying drawings, there is provided a pair of rail sections 1 and 2 each of which consists of a base 3, a web at and a head 5. The adjacent ends of the sections 1 and meet in an improved joint indicated in its entirety by the numeral 6 while angle bars 7 are arranged on opposite sides of the rails and conform to the shape thereof being arranged to engage the web and the upper surface of the base flanges and the under surface of the head being held against displacement through the instrumentality of suitable bolts 8 which pass through the angle bars and the web of the rail sections while the parts are reniovably clamped in a stationary position through the instrumentality of adjustable element such as nuts 9.
In reducing the improved joint 6 to practice the rail section 1 has its opposite sides sloped or beveled inwardly in convergent relation with each other as indicated by the numeral 11, terminating in a point, form ing in effect a tapered tongue 11 of the base flanges. The web portion 4 of the same section isforined with an inwardly extending V -shaped recess 12 while the head of the rail section 1 is extended as indicated by the numeral 13 for a purpose that will presently appear. The other rail section 2 has its base provided with a V-shaped recess 14: which extends inwardly from the end of the section and terminates directly beneath the web portion. This section 2 also has its web portion extended to provide a tongue 15 the upper and lower edges converging to a point 16 being practically designed for engagement with the V-shaped recess 12 in the adjacent end of the other section. The head 5 of the section 2 is cut away to form a recess 17 which is designed to accommodate the extended portion 13 of the head of the other section. It is to be observed particularly that the tapered tongue 11 and the recess 14, the recess 12 and the tapered tongue 15, and the extended head portion 13 and the recess 17 are respectively coniplemental so that when the rail sections 1 and 2 are moved toward each other they will lie in interengageinent with each other and are capable of being held in such position by the angle bars 7 which are removably held in the position described by the bolts 8, and the nuts 9.

In addition, lateral movement is prevented owing to the engagement of the tapered tongue 11 lying within the V-shaped recess 14 in the base of the other rail section 2. The extended head portion 13 of course prevents accidental movement of the extended tongue 15 in the recess 12.
It is believed in view of the foregoing description that a further detailed description of the operation of the invention is entirely unnecessary. Likewise, it is thought that the advantages of the invention will be readily apparent.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely difierent embodiments of this invention could be made Without departing from the scope thereof it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limitedsense. It is also to be understood that the language used in the following claim is intended to cover all the generic and specific features of the invention herein described and all statements of the-scope of the invention which as a matter of language might be said to fall therewithin.

A rail joint comprising the meeting ends of a pair of rail sections, one of said sections having its head projecting beyond the web in which web there is formed an inwardly extending V-shaped recess, and having its base flangetapered off to provide a tapered tongue, the other of the rail sections having its head terminating short of the web which latter is formed on the end in the shape of a tapered tongue for engage ment in the V-shaped recess of the first section, the base flange of the said latter section being formed with a V-shaped recess for the reception of the tapered tongue of the first said section, the tapered tongues and recesses 01? the flanges and webs forming interlocking joints preventing relative lateral movement between the two sections, the projecting head of one section abutting the shortened head of the other section to break the joints between the heads and the base flanges.
