TAMPING-MACHINE.
Application filed June 16, 1919. Serial No. 304,672.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, FRANZ MARTENs, a citizen of the German Republic, and residing at Elberfeld, Germany, have invented certain Improvements in Tamping-Machines, of which the following is ;a specification.
The invention relates to machines for tamping or ramming earth or pebbles along rail-way-tracks where the earth or filling material needs to be solidly tamped under and around the sleepers or in other locations.
The present invention comprises a truck furnished with any kind of motor mounted on a frame for propelling it andmoving the tampers by intermediate links. A shaft is geared for rotation to an electric or gasolene motor for propelling by means of bevelwheels two cranked axles, provided with a plurality of cranks or their equivalent,
each of which is operatively connected with one or more bars for movingthe tamping devices. The bars are joined by bolts oscillating around a displacing center of oscil-, lation. To each position of this center corresponds anotherposition of the bolts deviation, in the manner that all oscillations terminate in one point and likewise the direction of the tampers, which may be horizontal or slanting in different directions for use in tamping-or packing ballast under and around the ties of railways in any suitable way. The tampers can be displaced or elevated to any required height by means of hand-wheels screwing on a shaft with slots for inserting the bars of the tampers.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a tamping-machine. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Figs. 3 and 4: are views of the tampers. Fig. 5 illustrates the manner in which the tampers work in the different positions of the displacin center of oscillation.
lhe truck is composed of suitable side frames 1, united by end-beams 2, and having pedestals to receive the axles 3 of the bevel gears l. 1 V
The propelling device is a motor 5 geared to the crank shafts 6, and 7 in the ordinary manner. At each end of the shafts 6 and 7 and at intermediate points are cranks 8,
each of which is connected by a rod 9, se-
cured by a bolt 10 to the bars 11 of the tampers. For each bar 11 shaft 12 serves as Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 28, 1919.
fulcrum; in the slots 13 of which the tamper bars 11 slide, and which is secured in the lower part of the frames 1 by adjustingblocks 14 containing hand-wheels 15 for adjusting the shaft 12 and the tamper bars 11 by screwing the spindle 20. The tanipers can be laid horizontally in this way.
The bolt 10 is the working-point of a lever 16, that is mounted to turn with a shaft 17 in slots 18 thereof,'circular to the meeting-point of the oscillation-ways of the bolts 10, as shown in Fig. 5. r
The axles 6, 7, l2 and 17 are placed in the adjusting blocks 19 fastened lengthwise to the frame 1. By moving the adj listing blocks toward and from each other the tampers can be regulated. In Fig. 5 the ways 10-1, l02, 103 are the oscillations around the different positions of the shaft 17 and I, II, III are the corresponding ways of the tampers.
In Figs. 3 and 4: the tampers 21 are joined with their bars by employing pressuresprings 22 for preventing strong shocks against the bars and in order to lengthen the time of the pressure against the ties.
The tamping-machine is also qualified to beds comprising drive rods, means for actuati-ng said drive rods, tamping levers pivotally connected to said drive rods, means for adjusting the pivotal connection betweenthe drive rods and tamping levers, and means slidably engaged by said tamping levers for adjusting the positions of the tamping levers. V
2. A. machine for operating upon road beds comprising drive means, a tamping lever pivotally connected to said drive means, means for adjusting the pivotal connection between said drive means and tamping lever, and means slidably engaged by said tamping lever for angularly adjusting said tamping lever with respect to said drive means and about the pivotal connection therebetween.
3. A. machine for operating upon road beds comprising a movable rod, means for driving said rod, a tamping lever pivotally connected to said rod, means slidably engaged by said tamping lever for raising and lowering said lever, and an adjustable lever coupled to the pivotal connection between the movable rod and tamplng lever and act-- mg to shift the pivotal connection.
f. A machine for operatingupon road beds comprising a reciprocating rod, means to reciprocate said rod, a talnpin'g'lever pivotally connected to said reciprocating rod, means coupled to the pivotal connection between said rod and tamping lever for adjusting the position of the lever with regard to the rod, means slidably engagedby said tamping lever, and an adjusting device for shifting said last-named means.
5. A, machine for operating upon road beds comprising crank shafts, a motor for driving said crank shafts, rods connected with the cranks on said crank shafts, tamping levers actuated by said rods, a slotted shaft through which said tamping levers are adapted to slidably engage, means for adjusting said slotted shaft, and adjusting blocks for carrying said crank and slotted shafts.
6. A machine for ope. 'ating upon road beds comprising a frame, adjusting blocks 011 said frame, crank shafts journaled in said adjusting blocks, a motor for rotating said crank shafts, rods connected to the cranks on said crank shafts, tamping levers actuated by said rods, a slotted shaft through which said tamping levers are arranged to slide, means for adjusting said slotted shaft, and swinging levers connected to the points at which said rods and tamping levers are joined.
7. A machine for operating upon road beds comprising a wheeled frame, adjusting blocks on said frame, crank shafts journaled on said blocks, a motor for rotating said crank shafts, rods connected to the cranks on said crank shafts, tamping levers pivotally connected to said rods, spring pressed tempers carried by said tamping levers, slotted shafts also carried by said adjusting blocks, spindles with hand wheels for independently adjusting said slotted shaft on said adjusting blocks, said tamp ing levers operating through the slots in said slotted shafts, and swinging levers connected to the pivotal connections between the rods and tamping levers.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
