Description

M. T. McDONNELL.
4m HO mums 0mm. APPLICATION FILED "AR. 4.' I918.
1,317,982. Patented Oct. 7,1919.
MICHAEL '1. MODONNELL, OF KAMLOOPS, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA.
AIR-HOSE PARTING-CHAIN.
Specification p1 Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 7, 1919.
Application filed March 4, 1918. Serial No, 220,328.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL T. McDon- NELL, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Kamloops, in the Province of British Columbia and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Air-Hose Parting-Chain; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in air-brake equipment for railway cars.
An important object of this invention is to rovide means for uncoupling air-hose sections upon the arting of the cars, said means being opera le with a minimum of strain on the air-hose.
A further object of this invention is to provide a chain or other flexible element for connection with one end of the coupling whereby the strain on the air-brake equipment incident to the arting of the cars will be im arted to said exible element.
A urther object of the invention is to provide a chain or other connecting element for connection with the air-hose, said chain being of a lesser length than the air-hose and having novel means for adjusting the same. e
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specificatlon and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevation of one end of a railway car, showing my im-' proved railway air-brake equipment applied thereto,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of an adjusting element embodied in the invention, and
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same.
In the drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a railway car having a sill 6.
The usual coupling member 7 is disposed beneath the sill 6. An air-hose 8 forming a part of the air-brake equipment extends longitudinally of the car and projects therebeyond. The outer end of the hose 8 is provided with a coupling 9 adapted for connection with a coacting coupling of the adjacent car. As illustrated in Fig. 1, the hose section has a chain 10 connected to its forward end thereof and to the sill of the car. The chain 10 is of a lesser length than the hose section 8 and therefore any strain incident to the parting of the cars will be imparted to the chain 10. An adjusting element 11 is interposed in the chain 10 and is adapted for lengthening and shortening the chain as may be required. The adjusting element 11 comprises a pair of arms 12 having interlocking fingers 13. An elongated slot 14 is provided in one of the arms 12 and is ada ted to receive a locking element 15. It will be apparent that the lengthening or shortening of the chain 10 may be effected by adjusting the arms 12 in relation to each other.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is understood that I may make such minor changes in arrangement and construction of parts, as will remain Within the spirit of the invention and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim 1s:
1. In combination with a railway train pipe coupling, a chain rigidly attached to the car sill and to the forward end of said pipe coupling, said chain being shorter than the pipe coupling whereby all strain on the pipe coupling is imparted to the chain, and an adjusting element interposed in said chain.
2. In combination with a railway pipe coupling, a chain rigidly attached to the car sill, the outer end beln attached to the tram pipe coupling near its outer end thereof, said chain being shorter than the pipe coupling whereby all strain incident to the parting of the cars is imparted to said chain, and an adjusting element interposed in said chain, said adjusting element including 00 actin arms and interlocking fingers.
3. n combination with a railway pipe arms and interlocking fingers, and means to retain said coacting arms in engagement.
In testimon whereof I aflix my signature in presence 0 two witnesses.
MICHAEL T. MCDONNELL. Witnesses:
LILLIAN FINNILA, Mrs. C. M. BROWN,
coupling, a chain ri idl' attached to the cur sill, the outer en 0 said chain being attached to the outer end of said pipe coupling, said chain being of a lesser length than said pipe coupling to relieve the coupling of all strain when parting the cars, an adjustin element interposed in said chain, said adwsting element including coaeting 60910] 0! thin potent may be obtained tor five cents each, by addressing the "Commissioner of Patenh, wlllllllmll, ID. 0."
