Specification of Letters latent.
P te t smat- 7, 131i?- ltpplilcation filed November 4, 1918. Serial No. 261,026.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Greener JULmN LA- caors ERMONT, a citizen of France, residi g at Flint, in the county of Genesee and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Syringes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to syringes, particularly to that type employed for vaginal irrigation, and has for its object the provision of a syringe so constructed as to give a very poiverctul and practically continuous flow, the construction of the device being such that the pump member may be partially immersed in any desired receptacle containing water or chemical solution, whereby the inconvenience of filling the pump barrel manually will be avoided.
An important object is the provision of a device of this character in which the plunger is spring pressed so that it will be automatically returned to its potential position, sucking in a new charge of water or solu tion upon its return.
A further object is the provision of a deviceof this character provided with a double nozzle employed for ordinary irrigation, the outer-most nozzle being removable, whereby a comparatively small stream may be injected with great violence for treatment under certain special conditions.
Another object is the provision of a syringe of this character in which the various parts may be quickly and easily removed to facilitate cleaning and in which the construction will be comparatively simple and inc ensive. I
With the a ove and other objects and advantages in view, such as the general im provement of the art, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view therethrough.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detailed sectional view through the strainer member.
Fig.5 is a detailed sectional view through the discharge nozzle.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, he numeral 10 designates a cylindrical casing, the lower end of which is widened to provide a base 11, Which has its periphery provided with a plurality of notches 12. At its upper end the casing 10 is externally threaded for engagement thereon of an internally threaded cap 13, which has its upper portion provided with an inwardly ex tending guide sleeve 14, Within which is movable a plunger rod 15, carrying at its upper end an enlarged knob 16, serving as a handle. The inner end of the plunger rod 15 is reduced and threaded into a piston 17 provided with suitable packing rings 18. The piston 17 is freely slidable within the body 10 and is normally held in an elevated position by a coil spring 19, disposed within the body 10 and bearing against a shoulder 20 formed in the lower portionthereof.
Formed in the body 10 :below the shoulder 20 is a bore 21, within which is threaded a cage 22, having its lower portion -.provided with a valve seat 23, upon which is disposed a ball 24, vertical movement of which is limited by a transverse pin 25 extending across the top of the cage. At its lower extremity the cage is provided with a screen 26 of suitable wire mesh to act as a strainer. Intermediate its ends the body 10 has formed thereon or secured thereto a nipple 27 which communicates with the interior of the body through the opening 28, about which is formed a valve seat 29 upon which is adapted to seat a ball 30, which serves as a check valve. Movement of the ball within the nipple is limited by a transverse pin 31 extending across the nipple.
- The discharge nozzle comprises a tubular body 32, which is connected with the nipple 27 by means of a rubbertube 33. The tubular body 32 is provided intermediate its ends with a threaded portion 34 from which extends a small discharge tube 35. Engaged upon the threaded portion 34 is a relatively large nozzle 36, which is of a size and shape convenient for insertion within the vagina, and which is provided adjacent its free end with a plurality of perforations 37 The construction of the relatively large nozzle 36 is such that its inner walls will be spaced from the sides and end of the relatively small nozzle or tube 35 for a purpose to be described.
In the operation of the device the body 10 is disposed within any suitable receptacle containing the water or medicinal solution to be used. The operator grasps the handle it) and reciprocates the plunger rod and piston 17, it being understood, of course, that the nozzle is first inserted within the vagina. ()n the up-stroke of the piston 17 the ball. 24 will be unseated, allowing the water or solution to be drawn through the cage 22 and into the body 10, the screen 26 SBlVll'lg to remove any foreign matter. On the down-stroke of the piston 17 the ball 24 will engage the seat 23 and the ball 30 will be unsoated from the seat 29, whereupon pressure within the body 10 will cause the water therein to be forced through the rubber tube and out through the relatively small nozzle 3 into the space between the nozzles and 3 whence the water will be discharged through the perforations 37. This operation oi the device will consequently result in thorough cleansing of th vagina and its associated parts.
In some instances, it is highly desirable that a relatively small stream be injected violently to etlcct certain treatment. 1n this event, it is merely necessary that the operator unscrew the outer nozzle 36, allowing the full force of the stream from the small nozzle 35 to be applied.
l Vhile I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it will, of course, be readily understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the construction and arrangement of the parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention nor the scope of the subjoincd claims.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A device oi? the character described comprising an upright hollow cylindrical body, an enlarged flaring face formed on the lower end of said body, said base terminah ing in a Hat bearing flange provided with a plurality of recesses establishing communication with the interior of the base, the material ot' said body adjacent its juncture with the base being provided with a threaded opening, a valve cage threaded within said opening and projecting beyond the lower end thereof whereby to provide a finger hold, a valve within said casing, an upwardly spring pressed plunger mounted for slid-able movement within said body, an outlet nipple on said body intermediate the ends tlltBl'QOf, and an outwardly opening valve in said nipple.
2. ln a, device of the character described, an outlet nozzle conipi'isii'ig a tubular body having one end adapted for connection with a flexible tube and having a portion oli' its length externally threaded, a reduced extension on said body, said body and extension being provided with a relatively small bore, and an auxiliary nozzle formed as an elongated hollow body having one end engaging upon the threaded portion of said tubular body and having its other end rovided with a plurality of perforations, tie perforated end of said auxiliary nozzle bein spaced from the end of said extension and t 1e Walls of said auxiliary nozzle being in spaced re lation to said extension.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
GILBERT JULIllN LAGROIS VERMONT.
