A. W. GRAHAM.

APPLICATION FILED SEPT. I9. 1918.

ANDREW W. GRAHAM, 0 F BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
VENTILATING GARMENT SHIELD OR APPLIANCE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 30, 1919.
Application filed September 19, 1918. Serial No. 254,777.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW W. GRAHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ventilating Garment Shields or Appliances, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to garment shields for applying perfect ventilation to the armpits, and the surrounding portions of the body and garments of the wearer.
The object of the invention is to provide an armpit shield capable of being worn on the person in position to eject perfumed or powdered air under the armpits with the natural movement of the arms, which opcrates the bellows portion of the shield so as to force the air out of said bellows through the openings in the shield.
Another object of my invention is to provide a dress shield with a cooling arrange ment which will keep the armpit cool and dry by the natural movement of the arms.
Another object of my invention is to provide an armpit shield with a bellows arrangement which can be applied to brassieres, corsets, coats or any other garment, attached or detached thereto, so as to protect the garments against perspiration and objectionable odors.
The above objects I accomplish by the construction shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a View of my improved shield applied to the body.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of my improved shield.
The reference characters designate corresponding parts in all the figures. v
A designates the shield Proper, which may be made any suitable size or form, provided with the two flaps 1 and 2 between which there is arranged a bellows 3 which is made of waterproof material, such as rubber, rubberized cloth, oiled silk or any other suitable material.
The bellows 3 is open at the, top, as shown at 4 and the shield may be provided with openings 5 or holes 5, as shown in the drawmgs.
The bellows 3, by being arranged in the position shown in the drawing, is operated by the natural movement of the arm so as to force air through the openings under the armpit and will keep the arm cool and dry.
The pockets 6, which are formed by the sections of the bellows, may be filled through the opening 5 with perfumed powder, and when a person moves their arm it will tend to compress the bellows 3, which will force the air or perfumed powder through the openings 5, thereby eliminating the objectionable odors from perspiration.
The shield may be provided with shoulder straps 7 or may be fastened to the garments in the usual manner by pins or snap fasteners.
The bellows attachment for the dress shield will be made in the form shown in Fig. 2 and can be attached to any of the usual forms of dress shields by placing the bellows members 3 between the two flaps l and 2 and having openings such as shown at 5 in the shield.
What 1 claim as my invention is:
1. A garment shield provided with a bellows for circulating air and cooling the body.
2. A dress shield provided with a bellows compartment, wherein air, and medicaments can be retained and ejected for cooling and sanitary purposes.
3. A11 attachment for dress shields of the type having a pair of flaps connected at their upper edge and provided with perforations adjacent the connecting line, said attachment consisting of a flexible bellows member having edges adapted to be secured to the opposing surfaces of the dress shield flaps whereby to form an air pocket.
4. An attachment for dress shields of the type having a pair of flaps connected at their upper edge and provided with perforations adjacent the connecting line, said attachment consisting of a flexible bellows member having edges adapted to be secured to the opposing surfaces of the dress shield flaps whereby to form an air pocket, said bellows member being of waterproof material.
5. A bellows attachment for dress shields which consists in a collapsibly folded lunate member having edges adapted to be stitched to the insides of the flaps of a dress shield.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
ANDREW W. GRAHAM.
