Specication of Letters Patent. l Patented Sept. 3U, lllga Application led May 9, 1919. Serial No. 295,904.
To all 'whom it may concern.' r
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. STONE- BRI'DGE, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improve'- ments in Pneumatic Mattresses, of which the y following is a specification, such as willenable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the s ame.
This invention relates to what are known as pneumatic or similar mattresses, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device olf this class which may be used wherever such mattresses are requiredv or as a substitute for a mattress made in anyway, as for instance, in hospitals, vehicles or vessels or for domestic use a further object being to provide a mattress of the class specified which comprises a plurality of parallel inflatable bags, all of which are in communication through a transverse end member'and adapted to be inflated through a single air inflating nozzle or valve device.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawlng forms a part, in which the Fig. 4 a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing` a modiication.
In Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the accompanying drawing I have shown at a one form of my improved mattress which comprises a body portion a2 and head portion a3 and, in the practice of my invention, I provide a body casing I) of-any suitable waterproof fabric,
preferably rubberized canvas, and this body vcasing b is also divided into a body portionand a head portion, and the body portion is formed into separate arallel longitudinal 'compartments b2 in which are placed rubber tubes c, and the hcad'portion thereof forms a single transverse compartment b3 which is in communication with all of the rubber tubes c, and said head portion forms `the pillow of the mattress. v
The outer face of the head portion of the casing b is open as shown at b4 and adapted to be closed by a lacing or lace cord b5, and inwardly of said opening at the top of the head portion at al is secured a Hap d2 of any suitable material which closes the opening b4 when the mattress is in'use, and which is shown in position to close said opening in Fig. 2.
The head portion of the mattress is of the same length as the transverse width of the body portion thereof and placed in said head `portion is a tubular lining casing e of rubber or similar material, or of the same material as the tubes c are made of, and the tubes c are provided at their pillow ends with necks c2, and the part e with corresponding necks e2, and the necks 02 and e2 of each tube c are'connected by a central sleeve f inserted thereinto or over which said necks are slipped, and an outer strip or band f2 which incloses said necks and may be secured therearound in any desired manner so as to securely bind the parts c2 and e2 together.
The pillow or head member of the mattress is provided at one end with an Ordinar inlating nozzle or valve device g throug which said pillow or head end may be in- Hated, and in this operation all the parallel tubular members of the mattress body will also-be inflated as will be readily understood, and in this way the air pressure in the entire, mattress may be maintained at the same degree at all times.
If at any time one of the tubular members c of the body of the mattress should become broken or damaged in any way, the head portion of the mattress may be opened at b4 and the broken or injured tube c detached from the head portion of the 1nattress where the necks c2. and c2 are connected, and the broken or injured tube e removed, and a new one inserted in its place, and in this way any of the tubular members of the body portion of the mattress may be renewed or repaired when necessary.
The construction shown in Fig. 4 is the same in all respects as that shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, except that in this figure a tube h is substituted for the transverse headl v of the body portion of the mattress may be inflated as will be understood, and lit will also be seen that in Fig. 4, the outer casing b of the mattress is omitted but, in practice, the tubular members c in the body portion of the mattress shown in Fig. 4 Will be inclosed in the body casing b as is shown in Figs. 1v lto 3 inclusive, and the connection` between the tube it and the parts c at k2 in Fig. 4 is exactly the same as the corresponding connection in Figs. 1 and 2, the tube h being composed of rubber and being pro'- vided With the neck members e2.
With my improvement I provide a pneumatic mattress which is simple in construction, efficient in use and which Will be strong and durable and will not easily get out of order or need repair, and which, When not in use may be compactly folded together for shipmentor other purposes; and While I have shown and described the construction Which I prefer to employ in carrying my invention into effect, it Will be understood that the invention is not limited to the details of construction herein shown and described, and changes therein and modifications thereof may be made, Within the scope of the appended claims, Without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Iletters Patent, is z- 1. A mattress comprising a body portion and a transverse end portion, said body and end portions being composed of a iexible casing, the body part of which is divided into a plurality of separate longitudinal tubular sections, inflatable tubes pla-ced in said sections, an inflatable member placed in said end portion, and means for detachably connecting each of said tubes with said member.
2. A mattress comprising a bodyportion and a transverse end portion, said body and. end portions being composed of flexible material, the body portion being divided into a plurality of separate longitudinal tubular sections Which open into said transverse end portion, inflatable tubes placed in said v sections, an inflatable member placed in said end portion, said tubes being provided With reduced necks, and said inflatable member being provided With a plurality of reduced necks, and means for joining said necks.
3'. A mattress comprising a body portionl and a transverse end portion, said body and end portions being composed of iexible material, the body portion being divided into a plurality of separate longitudinal tubular sections which open into said transverse end porti-on, inflatable tubes placed in said sections, an inflatable member placed in said end portion, said tubes being provided With reduced necks, said inflatable member being provided with a plurality of reduced necks,
means for Joining said necks, an iniating valve in said member and by means of which said member and said tubes may be inflated, said transverse end portion being open to permit of the insertion of said tubes and member therethrough, and' means for clos-.75
