Specification of To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ToM SUTCLIFFE, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and residentof London, England, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Concrete or like Building Blocks and Methods of Makof which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved construction of hollow concrete or like building blocks and to a method of makingthe same. 1
My improved block is molded as a whole with full faces on all its aspects and a cavity or cavities in its interior, such cavity or cavities being so determined that each wall of the block is of uniform and predetermined thickness throughout.
The -method of manufacture, according to my invention, is an improvement on the known methods of molding hollow blocks used as a means of forming the cavities or in which core boxes are used that are left in the finished block.
In making my improved block I employ a mold of any suitable known kind which can be dismantled and a core which can be removed through holes in the walls of the blockafter the block is molded, the shape of the core being determined by a liner which is removed before the molding operation is completed. The holes aforesaid are formed during the molding of the block. A suitable material for forming the core is loose sand which can be readily extracted from the block by an air blast or otherwise.
The accompanying drawing illustrates, by way of example, a rectangular block constructed according to my invention and a convenient form of mold used for making the same.

The mold shown in Fig. 4 is constituted by a bottom board or plate C, side walls D, D, and end walls E, E, the walls being held firmly together when assembled by bolts J, J in the usual manner. The opposite pair of walls D, D are perforated at F, F to receive pins such as G, Fig. 6. H is a core frame or liner made, for example, of thin metal having four sides and open at the top and bottom, the size of said frame being equal to the desired size of the interior hollow space to be formed in the'block. The method of making the block is as follows :-The bottom plate 0, end plates E, E and side plates D,'D of the mold are assembled so that they form a box-like structure with an open top, as seen in Fig. 4. A layer of concrete mixture, of any desired thickness, is then made to cover the bottom plate C. The frame or liner H is then placed in the box so that it rests on the layer of concrete and occupies a position equidistant from the sides and ends of the box. The pins G, G are now passed through the holes F, F until their inner ends touch the liner H, after which the space between the liner and the inside of the box is filled in with concrete, thus forming the walls of the block. The inside of the liner is filled with loose sand which is pressed or rammed tight to form a perfect core, and the liner is then withdrawn. After such withdrawal a final layer of concrete is then put over thewhole and the top plate of the box (not shown) is fixed in positionso that the de 'sired finish is given to that face. It will be obvious that any form of reinforcing metal or other material can be introduced into the walls of the block during the operation of forming the'same in order to strengthen concrete has set, the pins G, G are withdrawn, and the block is removed from the box or mold. The sand core is then extracted through the holes F, F formed by the pins. A convenient mode of extracting the sand core is by means of an air blast. sand. The holes F, F are shown opposite one another in Fig. 4, but this arrangement of the holes is not essential.
If desired, two or more independent cores which might be desir able when great strength is required or when the blocks are of large size. The block shown in Fig. 1 has plain faces, but it will be obvious, since'the mold is of the kind that can be dismantled, that any desired impression can be imposed on these faces by suitably shaping the walls of the mold. For example, pieces can be arranged in the mold to form grooves or tongues on the sides or ends of the block, or a bevel can be similarly formed on the edges of the block.
I claim:
1. A method of molding a hollow concrete or like building block consisting in iorming a layer of concrete or the like on the bottom of a mold, placing thereon a hollow liner '(H) having the shape of the cavity 1 to be formed in the block, inserting pins (G, G) through the sides of the mold to touch the liner, forming the side walls of the block by filling with concrete the space be tween the liner and the side walls of the mold, filling the liner with sand, then withdrawing the liner, and placing a layer of concrete over the top to complete the block, and applying the lid of the mold, then when the concrete has set withdrawing the pins G, G), removing the block from the mold, and extracting the sand core from the interior of the block.
2. A method of molding a hollow con crete or like building block consisting in forming a layer of concrete or the like having reinforcing material therein on the bottom of a mold, placing thereon a hollow :liner (H) having the shape of the cavity to be formed in the block, inserting pins (G, G) through the sides of the mold to Copies of this patent may be obtained for the liner, and

A methodof molding a hollow concrete or like building block consisting in forming a layer of concrete or the like on the bottom of a mold, placing thereon a hollow liner (H) having the shape of the cavity to be formed in the block, inserting pins (G, Gr) through the sides of the mold to touch the liner, forming the side walls of the block by filling with concrete the space between the liner and the side walls of the mold, filling the liner with sand, then withdrawing the liner and placing a layer of concrete over the top to complete the block, and applying the lid of the mold, then when the concrete has set withdrawing the pins (Gr, G), removing the block from the mold, and extracting the sand core by means of a sand blast from the interior of the block.
4. A hollow concrete or like building block having full faces on all its aspects and walls of uniform thickness formed by applying a layer of concrete in the bottom of a mold placing thereon a hollow' liner having the shape of the cavity to be formed in the block, inserting pins through the sides 01 the mold to touch the liner, forming the side walls of the block by filling with concrete the space between the liner and the side walls ofthe mold, filling the liner with sand, then withdrawing the liner and placing a layer of concrete over the top to complete the block, and applying the lid of the mold, then when the concrete has set withdrawing the pins, removing the block from the mold, and extracting the sand core from the interior of the block.
