A stop 46 is secured to the flexible connection 40, and 47 is a bell-crank lever pivoted to the crane beam by a pin 48 and having a forked arm 49 which is arranged in the path of the stop 46. The other arm 53 of the bellcrank lever is connected by any suitable rod or cord 50 with a lever 51 on the valve 27 which admits compressed air to one endof the cylinder 20. any stationary object, it pulls upon the flexible connections, raises the resistance weight and overcomes the resistance of the air in thecylinder 38, and opens the valve 27 by brake cylinder applies the friction brake means of the bell-crank lever which is operated by the stop 46. j The compressed air thus admitted to the i to the brake wheel on the driving shaft of 1A similarcord or connection 56 is also secured to'the-lever 51 on the valve which when opened causes the brake to be applied, and is also carried tothe point from which the crane is operated, so that the valve can be opened by hand to apply the brake.
The valves on the air cylinders are of any approved make and may be three-way inlet and outlet valves, sothat the pistons can be moved in each direction at will. One end of the .air cushioning cylinder 38 is also connected with the reservoir by a pipe 58 having a valve 59, so that the slide can be retracted by air pressure if desired, and so that the pressure in the cushioning cylinder can be regulated.
What I claim is:
l. The combination, with a traveling crane provided with a revoluble driving shaft, of a friction brake mechanism controlling the said driving shaft, a movable contact device carried by the crane, and intermediate actuating devices interposed between the contact device and the brake mechanism whereby the brake is applied to check the revolution of the said driving shaft when the contact device is actuated. 7
2. The combination, with atraveling crane provided with a revoluble driving shaft,of a friction brake mechanism controlling the said driving shaft, an air cylinder for operating the brake mechanism provided with an inlet valve for compressed air, a movable contact device carried by the crane, and in- When the bumper strikes termediate actuating devices interposed between the contact device and the said inlet valve whereby the valve is opened and the brake is applied to check the revolution of the said driving shaft when the contact device is actuated.
3. The combination, with atraveling crane provided with a driving shaft, of a guide carried by the crane, a bumper slide engaging with the said guide and projecting in advance of the crane, a brake mechanism controlling the said driving shaft, an air brake cylinder provided with an inlet valve and operatively connected with the brake mechanism, a flexible connection attached to the bumper slide and provided with a resistance which normally holds the said slide projected, and means for connecting the flexible connection with the said inlet valve so-that the valve is opened to apply the brakewhen the bumper slide is pressed back in its guide.
7 4c. The combination, with atraveling crane provided with a driving shaft, of a bumper slidecarried by the crane and projecting in advance of it, a brake mechanism controlling the said driving shaft, an air brake device for operating the brake mechanism, a flexible connection operatively connected with the said air brake device and the bumper slide, and an air cushioning cylinder provided with a piston which is connected to the said flexible connection. 5. The combination, with a traveling crane provided with a driving shaft, of a bumper slide carried by the crane and projecting in advance of it, a brake mechanism controlling the said driving shaft, an air brake device for operating the brake mechanism, a flexible connection attached to the bumper slide and provided with a resistance which normally holds the slide projected, a stop carried by the said flexible connection, and a pivoted bell-crank lever having one arm arranged in the path of the said stop and having its other arm operatively connected with the air brake device.
6. The combination, with atraveling crane provided with a driving shaft, of a. bumper slide carried by the crane and projecting in advance of .it,'a brake mechanism controlling the said driving shaft, an air brake device for operating the brake mechanism, a flexible connection attached to the bumper slide and provided with a resistance which normally holds the slide projected, a stop carried by the said flexible connection, and a pivoted bell-crank lever having one arm arranged in the path of the said step and having its other arm operatively connected with the air brake device, said bell-crank lever being formed of two spring-controlled arms provided with overlapping lugs which connectthe arms positively in one direction and permit one arm to be moved out of the path of the stop against the pressure of the spring without moving the other arm.
7. The combination, with atr-aveling crane provided with a driving shaft, of a bumper slide carried by the crane and projecting in advance of it, a brake mechanism controlling the said driving shaft, an air brake device for operating the brake mechanism, a flexible connection attached to the bumper slide, a variable resistance attached to the flexible connection and normally holding the bumper slide projected, said resistance increasing step by step as the bumper slide is pushed back, and means for operatively connecting the said flexible connection with the air brake device.
8. The combination, with a traveling crane provided With a driving shaft, of a bumper slide carried by the crane and projecting in advance of it, a brake wheel secured on the driving shaft, pivoted brake jaws for engaging the brake wheel, a brake shaft pro vided with right and left screw threaded portions for operating the brake jaws, an air brake cylinder provided with a piston and pistonrod, a toothed rack and toothed wheel connecting the said piston-rod wit-11 the brake shaft, and means for operating the air brake cylinder to apply the brake when the said bumper slide is pushed back.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
