Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 2, 1919.
Application filed June 20, 1918. Serial No. 240,895.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK B. Tom, a citizen of the United States, residing at Horton, county of Weston, and State of Wyoming, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sliding Ladders for Ships, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in ladders, particularly to such types as are adapted to be used in connection with seagoing ships, and has as its special object the provision of means whereby a ladder may be easily and quickly suspended from over the gunwale of a ship, so as to be used by people in the water adjacent to the hull, or for other like purposes.
A further object is to provide a double fastening means by which the ladder is secured, and
A still further object is to provide means whereby the ladder may be completely released from its supports at any desired time.
These and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary front elevational view of a ship, indicating the attachment of a ladder made in accordance with the invention, and
unwale or surrounding guard 14, extend-.
mg above the deck, and having rigidly attached to it at any preferred point along the side, a pair of brackets 15, in which is mounted a shaft 18, having rollers 17.
In the tops of the brackets are V shaped recesses 20, adapted to receive the ends 22 of a connecting bar 23, secured to the exterior of the downturned hook elements 25 of the ladder sides 26, the same extending downward "so as to enter into the water, and havmg fixed between them a plurality of rungs 27 while extending directly outward are posts 29, supporting the hand rails 28, used in ascending or descending the ladder.
Secured to the inner surface of the ladder sides 26 is a pair of hook shaped clips 30,.
adapted to engage, when the ladder is in its lowermost position, with the upper surface,
of the rollers 17, thereby affording in connection with the enga ement of the bar 23 and the recesses 20 a ouble suspension for the ladder, which prevents the same from swmging to and fro with relation to the hull of the ship, it hein understood that the rollers 17 act as guides in positioning the ladder or in retracting the same over: the sides of the ship. 7
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is,
In a sliding ladder, the combination with a pair of rigidly supported brackets of a rol er rotatably mounted therein, a iadder comprised of oppositely disposed sides having rungs secured therebetween and adapted to move over said rollers, hook detents engaged with said ladder sides and adapted to engage with said rollers at the limit of the downward movement of said ladder, hook ends formed with said ladder sides, a bar mounted in said hook ends, and means formed in the upper ortion of said brackets receivable of said ar.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature.
FRANK B. TOTH.
