UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK o. DORMENT, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR r0 FRANK PREvEc, or CLEVELAND, 01110.
INHALER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK C. DORMENT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Inhalers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The present invention relates to inhalers of the small or portable type embodying a receptacle adapted to contain a desired medicinal material, which receptacle has suitable outlet for application by the user to the mouth or nose, and by respiration air is drawn through the receptacle impregnated with the medicinal material and passes to the nose passages, throat and lungs of the user.
Among the objects sought to be accomplished is to provide an inhaler of such construction that the device is sanitary and use does not vitiate the contents of the inhaler.
A further object is to provide a construction by which the device is rendered substantially non-leakable so that it may be carriedin the pocket of the user, and the contents will not be discharged when the device is carried in other than an upright position. v
A further object is to provide a structure wherein the user by respiration forces air through the liquid within the receptacle whereby the air becomes charged with vapor, and further to provide a construction for the purpose which will be sightly in appearance but so constructed as to permit of low cost of manufacture.
Other objects will appear as the description proceeds, and generally, the invention may be said to comprise the elements and combinations thereof set forth in the accompanying claims.
Reference should be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this invention, in which Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the device; Fig. 2 is an elevation partly in section of the device; and Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates a container or receptacle which is hollow, and at its upper portion has an opening through which extends a tube 2. This tube projects upon the outside of the receptacle and there is a go-odl portion of the tube which ex tends within the receptacle,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 2, 1919.
Application filed December 26, 1918. Serial No. 268,251.
The end of the tube 2 which is upon the outside of the receptacle is adapted to re ceive an end piece 3 which preferably is formed to fit over the tube 2, and has a central passage 3*. The end member 3 is of suitable form so that the device may be applied to' the mouth of the user or to the nostril.
The lower portion of the container is closed by means of a head 4. This head is provided with an extending flange l" which engages with the walls at the lower end of the receptacle 1, and the head 4 is secured to the receptacle 1 in a position indicated in the drawings in any suitable manner, as by a soldering or sweatingproccss. Within the receptacle there is a tubular member 5. This tubular member is open at its lower end, and cooperates with a boss or extension 4" formed upon the inner side of the head 4:. The tubular member 5 is secured to the boss 1 in any desired manner, as by a soldering orsweating process. The tubular member is, adjacent its lower portion, provided with one or more openings, such as indicated at 5*. Through the boss 4 there is an opening through which extends a short tube 6. The tube 6 as shown in the drawing extends up into the tubular member 5. The tube is secured to the boss 4 in any desired manner, as by a soldering or sweating' process. I
In operation, when the part 3 is applied to the mouth or nostril of a user, the inhalation of the user draws air through the tube 6, which air passes through liquid contained within the receptacle 1, through the openings 5, through the tube 2, and to the mouth or nostril of the user. It will thus be seen that the air is forced through the liquid and in passing through the liquid becomes saturated with vapor of the liquid, and in this condition passes to the user.
It will be apparent that when the receptacle is carried in its upright or vertical position as shown in the drawing, the liquid is so held within the container as to be nonleakable. If the receptacle be inverted with respect to the position shown in the drawing, it will be seen that the liquid will in part collect in the portion of the receptacle 1 adjacent the tube 2. The tube 2 is of such length that the liquid will not find exit through that tube. That portion of the liquid which normally lies within the tubular member 5, w ill fiow to the closed be practically negligible.
One very great advantage of the construction as has just beendescribed, lies in the fact that the device may be very inexpensively manufactured. The receptacle 1 may be formed by a drawing process from a flat blank. The part4 may also be formed as a stamping. The tubular member 5 may be drawn from a flat blank. The tubes 2 and 6 of proper sizes for use in thisdevice are articles of commerce which may be obtained on the open market and require no special "processes in their manufacture. In fillin the device, the part3 isremoved and a su cient quantity of the medicinal liquid which it is desired to use is poured through the tube 2. It will be obvious that changes in. the details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of this invention. Having described my invention, I claim: 1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a receptacle having an exit opening therein, means forming-acham ber'within said receptacle, said chamber be.- ing provided with'outlets which communicate with the, said receptacle, and an air conduit communicating with the exterior of the receptacle which extends into the said cham: bered portion.
V 2. Ina device of the character described, the combination with a receptacle, arhollow member Within said-receptacle, said hollow I member being provided with openings which I tending ,into the'hollowr membe'r.
communicate with the interior of said receptacle, and an air conduit communicating with the outsideof said receptacle and ex- 3. In adeviceofthe character'described,
' the combination with a receptacle havlng an exit opening, a tubular member; closed atone end within. the said receptacle,- said tubular member being provided Wltl] openings which communicate with thei1nter1or of said receptacle, and an air tube communicating with the exterior of said receptacle and extending into said tubularmember.
" 4. In a device of the character described,
the combination with a receptacle, a tube extending through said receptacle, a portion of said tube lying Within the chambered member, a hollow member forming a chambered portion within said receptacle, said hollow member being provided with openings which communicate with the interior of said receptacle, and an air tube extending from the interior of said hollow member tothe outside of the receptacle- 5. Ina device of the characterdescribed, I
the combination with a receptacle having an opening through which extends aptube,
said tube extending in partfupongthe interior and upon theexteriorzof the receptacle, a tubular member closed at one ;end
withinsaid receptacle, said tubular member being provided with openings which communicate with said receptacle, and an air 'tube carried by said receptaclewhich extends within said closed tubular member, an
air tube having communication with the exterior of the receptacle.
6. In a device of the character described,
the-combinationgwith a hollow shell, a head closing one end -of-the shell, a hollow v member carried by said head and extend ing within the shell, said hollow member being provided with openings which communicate .with the. interior of the shell, a
tube carried .bv the head and extending within the saidhollow member, and a tube extending through an opening within the shell.
7 In a end, a headaoccupying said open end, a closed tube carried by said head and exbeing provided with openings, and a part device of the character described, 7 the combination witha shell having an open which is'adjacen't the head, a tube extend- 7 ing through the said head and Within the closed tube, saidshell being provided with an-opening, a tube extending within said v opening, .sald tube extending inpart within the shell and in part without the shell.
. In testimony whereof, .I hereunto afiix my signature.
Copies of this'patent inay be obtained forjfive eents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patentsi Washington, .11.. 0.
