To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, THOMAS 'C. JOHN- soN and CHARLES E. BLIZARD, 'CltlZ(-3I1S of the United States, residing at New Haven in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Breakdown Shotguns; and we do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in
Figure 1 a view in vertical central section of a gun constructed in accordance with our invention, showing its hammer in its full cocked position.

Our invention relates to an improved breakdown shot gun, the object being to simplify and cheapen. the construction of such a gun and to utilize the hammer to lock the gun closed on full cooking the hammer preparatory to firing the gun.
With these ends in view, our invention consists in a breakdown shot gun having its hammer and sliding barrel-locking bolt constructed so that the full cocking of'the hammer positively locks the barrel-locking bolt of the gun in its locking position.
Our invention further consists in a breakdown shot gun in which the forward end of the trigger-guard supports the forward end of the sliding barrel-locking bolt employed to lock the gun in its closed position.
Our invention further consists in a breakdown shot gun having certain details of construction and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In carrying out our invention as herein shown, we employ a trigger-guard 2 mounting the hammer 3 and trigger 4 of the gun. At its forward end, the guard is secured in place by a pin 5 passing transversely through it and the side walls of the receiver 6 and formed with an upwardly inclined bearing-surface 7 which supports the forward end of the sliding barrel-locking bolt 8 which is formed with a central longitudln-al slot through which the hammer rises as shown in Fig. 1, the said forward end of the bolt riding back and forth upon the said surface. The said bolt is mounted in the receiver in which it extends rearwardly, and the hammer 3 is pivoted at a 'ceiver and engaging the forward end of the barrel lug in the well known manner. By means of the construction just described, the forward end of the guard is utilized to suppoft the forward end of the barrel-locking o t 8. The hammer 3 (which pivots upon a pin 13) and the sliding-bolt 8 are constructed and proportioned so that when the hammer is swung back into its full cocked position, as shown in Fig. 1, the forward'sear-step 14 at its lower end engages with the rear face of the downwardly curved forwardend of the bolt at the point 15 thereon and positively holds the bolt in its locked posltion so that it becomes impossible tobreak the gun down when the hammer is in its full cocked position, thereby greatly adding to the safety of the arm. When the hammer,
however, is in its'half cocked position as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, sufficient clearance is established between the searstep 14 of the hammer and the point 15 of the bolt to permit the bolt to be retracted and the gun opened or broken down.
At its rear end, the guard is formed with a stem-like butt-stock tang 16 adapted to enter a round hole 17 formed for its reception in the forward face of the butt-stock 18. This tang is internally threaded for the reception of the threaded forward end of the b1 1tt-stock bolt 19, the tang 16 being thus.located entirely within the butt-stock. To hold the guard 2 and the receiver 6 against endwise longitudinal movement, the guard is formed in the rear end of its upper face with a transverse locking-slot 20 for the reception of a corresponding trans- Verse locking-rib 21 formed upon the lower.
face of the rear tang 22 of the receiver. A fasteningscrew 23 extending downward through the said tang 22 and through the rib 21 and the slot 20 into the rear portion of the guard, firmly binds the receiver and guard together at this point.
The other features of our improved gun constitute no part of our present invention and need not be described in detail, more than to say that a lever 24 is provided for the operation of the bolt 8, this lever being mounted in the receiver and formed with a hub 25 co-ac'ting with the rear end of the said bolt. A spring 26 encireling'a spring-guide 27 .is provided for holding the bolt normally in its projected or locked position. When the hammer is full cocked, it prevents the lever 24: from being operated.
For the operation of the hammer, we employ a hannner-spring 28 encircling a spring-guide 29 the forward end of Which is furnished with a head 30 co-actin'g' with the rear face of the hammer heel. The gun is also provided with an ejector 31 operated by an'ejecto-r-spring 32 and held forward in its retired position by a latch 33 hung on a pin 34. i
We claim 1. In a breakdown shot gun, the combina tion with the receiver and pivotal barrel thereof, of a sliding barrel-looking bolt mounted in the receiver and extending rearwardly therein, and a hammer pivoted forward of the rear endof the said bolt the forward end of which is extended downward in front of the heel-of the hammer, the said forwardend of the bolt and the heel of the hammer being proportioned so that when the hammer is in its fully cooked position, its heel will engage with the forward portion of the bolt for holding the same in its locked position.

In a breakdown shot gun, the combination with the receiver and pivotal barrel Copies of this patent may lie obtained'for five cents each, by addressi thereof, of a sliding barrel-locking bolt having a longitudinal slot and its forward end being downwardly curved, and a hammer rising through the longitudinal slot of the bolt, the downwardly curved forward portion of the bolt and the heel of the hammer being relatively proportioned for holding the bolt in its locked position when the hammer is in its fully cocked position.
3. In a breakdown shot gun, the combination with a receiver formed at its rear end with a tang, ofa butt-stock and butt-stock bolt, a trigger-guard formed at its rear end with a rearwardly projecting butt-stock tang entering a hole in the said butt-stock and receiving the threaded forward end of the butt-stock bolt, a transversely arranged locking-rib and a locking-slot formed in the rear end .of the tang, and in the guard respectively for holding the same against longitudinal movement, and a screw passing downward through the tang of the receiver and through the said rib and slot into the trigger-guard for binding the receiver and guard together.
4. Ina breakdown shot gun, the combination' with the receiver .and pivotal barrel thereof, of a sliding barrel-locking bolt mounted in the receiver, a trigger-guard secured at :its rear end to the receiver by a screw passing downward into it from the upper face thereof, and having its forward end secured to the receiver by a transversely arranged pin, the forward end of the guard beinga-dapted to support the forward end of the said bolt.
