Application filed March 15, 1919. Serial No. 282,794.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES STnNonL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hamilton, Butler county, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ball-Cocks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention, pertaining to ball cocks, relates to improvements designed to iucrea se the accuracy and noiselessness in operation of this class of devices.
The improvements will be readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a plan, and Fig. 2 a vertical section in the plane of line a of Fig. 1, of a ball cock embodying an exemplification of my improvements.

14, a disk, as of rubber, secured to the upper end of tube 12 by its cap, this disk forming the valve which seats downwardly on the upper end of tube 4:
15, a pivot carried by the pivot-bearing at right angles to the axis of tube 4:
16, a lever mounted on this pivot and having its inner end projecting over cap 13:
17, a screw adjustable in lever 16 and impinging on cap 13; and
18, the ball stem, which is to be assumed as being provided on its outer end with the usual float ball.
The parts are shown with the valve closed, thus preventing the admission of water through the supply passage, and the valve is to be assumed as being held closed by the buoyant action of the float, as usual.
When the float descends, due to the lowering of the level of the water in the tank, the valve is permitted to rise and open under the influence of the pressure of supply. The water entering through the opened valve passes down in the space between tubes 12 and 4 and reaches chamber 2, the pressure of the water in the chamber distending the central portion of the gasket upwardly so that it makes a tight joint with the flange surrounding tube 12. The water, under accumulated pressure in chamber 2, presses upwardly on cap 7, which acts as an outlet valve, the departing water leaving the outlet in the form of a flat spray which is turned downward by the skirt of cap 7 and is at liberty to enter the tank. Spring 9 resist the opening of the outlet valve, and its tension may be adjusted by screw 8. The result is that the outlet may deliver its water in a comparatively noiseless manner.
Screw 17 may be employed in adjusting the height of the float when valve 14 is closed. Disk 14, forming the inlet valve, may be renewed by removing cap 13 from tube 12. Pivot 15 being removed, permits the removal of lever 16 and the ready Withdrawal of tube 12 and the inlet valve, the pivot-bearing 10 being provided with a large central aperture to permit such withdrawal.
I claim 1. A ball-cock comprising, a body having a chamber provided with an outlet and with an inlet extending above the top of the chamber, an apertured pivot-bearing secured to the top of the body, a perforated gasket disposed between the pivot-bearing and the body, an inlet valve seating on the upper end of the inlet and loosely surrounding the same and projecting down through the perforation in the gasket and having a flange engaging over the gasket, and afloat lever pivoted to the pivot-bearing and having its inner end arranged to act downwardly upon the valve, combined substantially as set forth.
2. A combination such as recited in claim 1 when combined with an adjusting screw engaging between the inlet valve and the inner end of the float-lever, substantially as set forth. I

A combination such as recited in claim 1 when the inlet valve is formed of a thread- .ed tube provided with a cap screwed thereto and .clamping a disk between the cap and the upper end of the tube, substantially as set valve being provided with a skirt loosely surrounding the outlet, substantially as set forth.
5. A ball cock comprising, a body having a chamber provided with an inlet and with an outlet, an outlet valve for the outlet, a headed adjustable axial screw at the outlet, an outlet valve playing loosely on said screw, and a spring surrounding the screw over the outlet valve and under the head of the screw, substantially as set forth.
6. A ball cock comprising, a perforated elastic gasket, an inlet tube projecting through the gasket, a tubeloosely surrounding the inlet tube and engaging the gasket, and an inlet valve at the upper end of the last-mentioned tube and closing upon the inlet, substantially as set forth.
