Description
W. LLOYD. Improvement in Cornices for Windows.
No. 131,358.- Patented Sep.i7, 1872.
i 'n-A 1 fi a'iizmamf I I jizi izz ar:
UNITED STATES WILLIAM LLOYD, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND MICHAEL PATENT OEFIoE.
A. BURDETT, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CORNICES FOR WINDOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,358, dated September 17, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM LLOYD, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gornices; and that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of this invention is an improvement in cornices for windows, 860.; and consists in making such cornices easily and cheap- 1y adjustable to windows by fitting to them the end and center ornaments in the manner hereinafter fully described.
In the accompanying sheet of drawing, Figure 1 represents a front view of my invention; Fig. 2, a part back view, showing extension joint; and Fig. 3, a cross-section of same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures.
A represents a strip of wood of any desired width, and of such length as may be seen fit. Secured to the center of the strip A is an ornament, B. On each side of this central ornament and sliding upon the face of the strip A is an ornamental face-piece, O, which may be pushed toward or drawn from said central ornament, the outer ends of ornamental facepieces extending beyond the outer ends of the strip A, so that, by sliding the face-pieces G O, the cornice may be adjusted to any desired width of window. In order to retain the face pieces 0 to the strip A, a metallic extension joint, D, is secured, one end thereof to the strip A, and the other end to the face pieces, so that as the face pieces are moved in or out the metallic joint expands or contracts, and yet at the same time holds the two parts securely together. To prevent the face pieces 0 G from abrading the varnish or other ornamentation that may be applied to the strip A as they are drawn in or out, a soft lining, f, of any material, is cemented to the under side of said face pieces, which fully obviates this difficulty.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that cornices constructed in the manner above described may be readily and without alteration made to fit any window it is desired to ornament, so that cornices of all kinds may be kept on hand ready to supply any order, in this way obviating the necessity and expense of having the cornices constructed to fill each specific order or size of window.
I am aware of the patent heretofore issued to me on the 19th day of December, 1871, and assigned to G. L. Kelty, and therefore I do not desire to claim anything therein described and claimed; but
What I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, in window-cornices, of adjustable end pieces and extension joints, with the main central portion or molding, substantially as herein described.
WILLIAM LLOYD.
