Specification of Letters I'atcnt.
Patented Aug. 19,1919.
Application filed March 1, 1918. Serial No. 219,887.
T all whom it may concern Be it known following is a specification.
Mv present invention relates to electric more particueircliit control devices, and
larly to a switch mechanism to be associated with a clock or other suitable operating parts to be actuated to open and close the circuit at predetermined times.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a switch of the character described, the parts of which may be fitted to and secured in oonJunction with an alarm clock or other time piece of ordinary construction, and with which the circuit will be gompleted and broken at predetermined times during operation of the clock mechanism.
Other objects of my invention are to provide switch mechanism of the character described which is simple in construction, compact, neat in appearance, and Which may be arranged in existing circuits and embodied with an ordinary clock mechanism, or mechanism of a similar character, to provide a unitary time circuit control device, the parts at the same time being so constructed that when the circuit connection is broken there will not be tendency to circuit terminals.
Further objects of my invention will appear in the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which drawing:
Figure 1 is a view in elevation showing the structure of my invention as the same is are between the fitted to an alarm clock and diagrammatr cally illustrating a circuit connection.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary top plan view of the structure dimlosed in Fig. 1 to better illustrate the construction and fitting of the i switch parts.
In the drawing, where similar characters refer to similar parts in each of the views,,
which might be an ordinary alarm clock, and this time mechanism has a commutator structure B mounted on the hand spindle or shaft. Circuit wires C and D lead from the main line wires E and F to the brushes G is designated at A,
and H, the lamps I being connected in the branch circuit wires.
As has been stated, the time mechanism or clock A is of substantially standard-form, and the connnutator structure B which includes a. disk 1 of fiber or other suitable insulating material having a segmental plate '2 of brass or suitable conducting material carried thereby, has a sleeve 3 carried centrally on the inner side thereof to be remived over the hand spindle or shaft of the clock, a set screw l being provided to fix the commutator structure on this spindle or shaft in the proper mounting. ed on the clock casing block 6 is carried thereby, H being; mounted on and an insulating the brushes G and this insulating block, and binding screws 7 and 8 being provided for attachment of the circuit wires C and D in connection with these brushes G and H.
It. will of course be appreciated that the brushes G and H. will be separated a sailicient distance that an arc will not be set up therebctween at any time, and to properly guide the contact terminals of these brushes and to insure that they will not at any time be brought, closer than the predetermined distance, the comn'iutator structure has guide grooves 9 and 10 formed peripherally therearound and extending through both the insulating and the conductive material. It will of course be appreciated that the segmental condnctive member 2 might be made of greater or lesser length than is shown, the length of this member of course depending upon the period. of time during which the circuit connection is to be maintained, and that proper setting of the commutator portion C may be made, a hand 11 is provided. The operation of the time switch is as follows:
Assuming that the parts are set up and connected in a circuit as shown in the drawing, and that the segmental uember '2. is made of such length that it extends around substantially one third of the circumference of the commutator portion, which will mean that the segmental member occupies a. space corresponding substantially to four hours as indicated on the clock dial, the commutator portion will be set at such a point that when the hand 11 indicates on the clock dial the time at which it is desired that the circuit be closed, the segmental member 2 will at its forward edge bridge across between A bracket 5 is mount- .1 eerstrmxture, a bracket carried by wsing and having an, insuiating sup ei'ted. thereby, said mmznutafmr structure having guide grooves formed petibia i1 mesh? i-he hand .1 i 1 eerie-esp the standard he eieek me eperaies, by d 11 which eerzrespends be 5 I zipiiemiiy thereon and spaced, brushes carfne hour h {i sf 2, clock W1 be ii'lovecl med ii 'the insuiatm block and havm their v 1 1' 1 a v 1 :9 b around me -c* and v: 1" en.
