BUCKLE.
Be it known that I, ROBERT 11.3055, a
subject of the King ofGreat Britain, residing at Yarmouth, n the Province of Nova Scotla and Dominion of Canada, have 1nvented certain new and useful Improve ments in Buckles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,- clear,"and exact description of the invention, such as will enable'others skilled in the art to which'it appertains to make and use the same.
ing in which is a pivoted latchmember and a lace or strap adapted to passthrough the This invention relates'to improvements in buckles. The object of this invention is to improve the construction of buckles so as to render them capable of receiving a strap or lace therein, which strap or lace will be held againstmovement when the buckle is tightened or fastened thereto.
a 'A' further object of this invention is" to provide a buckle having a supporting houshousing and over one end of the pivoted latch member and be retained therein by the latch member and against accidental lateral movement in either direction.
A 'furtherobject of this invention is to provide a buckle capable of being used in connection with trunk straps, braces, garters, belts or other forms of straps. l
A still further object of this invention is to'provide a buckle of thischaracter, which will be simple, practical and comparatively inexpensive in construction and one that can be manufactured and sold at a low cost,
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and set forth in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a buckle made in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the pivoted latch member.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the sup porting housing for the latch member.
Fig. 5 is a detail sectional View illustrating the manner in which the pivoted latch member is pivoted to the side walls of the su porting housing.

drawing. 1 I
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 5 responding parts in all the figures "of the tirety it "is constructed of a. single piece of metal or other material'suitable' for the purpose and comprises a base plate 6 having its opposite side edges bent upwardly at right angles thereto to providefthe side flanges 7.. The'side. flanges 7 taper downwardly at the upper edge'intermediate the the base plate 6. Thei-side flanges also have, formed integrally with" their upper designates the supporting housing in its enedge's at the'highest point thereof the keeper i bar 9 which extends from one flange to the other to overlie the base plate' 6 as illustrated. The side flanges 7 are'also each'providedwith an alined transverse opening 10 which is loc'a'ted directly under the lug or Y keeper bar 9, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 4: of the drawing. The-side'flangesare'also provided against one'of their ends with vertical slots 11 which are in direct alinement with each other, the purpose 'of-whichwill be hereinafter more fully described A pivoted latch member 12 comprises a body 13 which is'substantially rectangular in cross section and it has its opposite side edges bent downwardly and tapered to provide the side flanges 14 which are provided in their larger ends at the bottom edge thereof with alined transverse openings 15. The 7 forward edge of the plate is bent upwardly as at 16 and tapered to provide the cutting edge which constitutes a latch. The rear end of the plate 13 has its opposite side edges extended laterally as at 18 to provide manipulating fingers. An inverted U- shaped yoke 19 has the terminals of its arms formed integrally with th opposite side edges of the plate 13 and adjacent to the manipulating fingers 18, the web of the yoke being located in spaced relation to the body 13 and in a plane slightly below the upper cutting edge 17 of the latch member 16.
The pivoted latch member 12 is positioned between the side walls or flanges 7 of the supporting housing, and the openings 15 are adapted to aline with the openings 10, thus positioning the latch 16 "under bars 8 and the keeper bar 9. An eyelet pivot 20 is secured in the openings 15 and 10 and the flanges 7 and 14, respectively, thus pivoting the latch member 13 to the side flanges 7' of the supporting housing, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing. The manipulating fingers, which aline with the slots 11, are adapted to project therethrough when in operative position, thus ositioning the tapered cutting edge 17 of t e latch 16 .in close proximity to the under side of the keeper bar 9. g
In use, a strap designated A in the drawing is inserted under onebar 8 at one end of the supporting housing 5. It is then run up over the latch 16 and inserted under the bar 9 and extends outwardly through the outer bar 8 at the opposite end of the plate supporting house. 7
It can be readily seen that by virtue of the bars ,8 the strap is held taut normally holding the manipulating fingered end of V the pivoted latch down. When it is desired to release the strap it is only necessary to grasp the lugs or fingers 18 with the fore finger and thumb of the hand and lift upwardly on the same to swing the pivoted latch member on its pivot 20 and move the transversely extending bars supported by said base plate at each end thereof and in spaced relation to the same, a retaining bar supported by the basep'late centrally thereof,
sald retaining bar extending transversely of the base plate and being positioned above the end bars, and a latch member pivotally mounted intermediate its ends upon the base plate and provided at one end with a gripping element positioned beneath and closely adjacent said retaining bar and cooperating therewith to grip a strap inserted between said end bars and the base plate and passed between the retaining bar and said gripping element.
2. A buckle comprising a supporting.
housing including a base plate, tapered side flanges formed integrally with the base plate, bars formed integrally with the upper edge of the flanges, of the base plateat each end thereof and overlying the base plate, a retaining bar formed integrally with the upper edge of the flanges centrally thereof, said flanges provided adjacent one end with slots, a pivoted latch member secured to the side flanges of the supportin 'r 1 housing, and manipulating fingers forme integrally with one endv of the latch member and arranged in the slots, said latch being provided at its opposite end with a gripping element'cooperating with said retaining bars":
to grip a strap inserted between the latch member and retaining bar and between the bars at the ends of the flanges and said base plate.
In testimony whereof Iaflix my signature-1c v in presence of two witnesses, I
' ROBERT H. ROSS.
