Specification of Letters Ilatent.
Patented Aug. 12, 1919.
Application led July 17, 1918. Serial No. 245,396.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELLEN M. FTNNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Coasters,
` of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in coasters.
The primary object 0f the invention is the provision of a coaster actuated by compressed air.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a coaster which when manually operated fills tanks which alternately operate with compressed air for the purpose of propelling the machine.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a connection between the compressed air tank and wheels of the coaster for rotating the latter and propelling the machine.
Still a further object of the invention is the provision of a machine of the above specified character which will be comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and efficient in use and readily operated.
With the above and other objects in view the present invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed,
and illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of the present application and in which;
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through the coaster.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof; and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken through the driving mechanism of one of the wheels.
Referring now to the accompanying drawing by corresponding characters of reference throughout the several views, the numeral 5 designates in general my improved coaster which consists of a base or body portion 6 having bracket bearings 7 secured to the under side thereof and in which the front and rear aXles 8 and 9 are journaled.
A body portion 10 is mounted upon the base 6 and includes oppositely disposed seats 11 upon the outer sides of which are mounted compressed air tanks 12 and 13.
Pipes 14: and 15 lead from the pumps or bellows 16 and 17 to the said tanks l2 and 13. An operating;` lever 18 is mounted centrally of the machine being disposed between the seats l1 and is connected by the links 19 to the pumps or bellows 16 and 17 so that upon the proper manipulation of the lever 18 air will be forced therein and compressed.
The front aXle 8 is pivoted as shown at 20 and has connected thereto a steering lever 21 Y operated by the hand lever 22 for the purpose of guiding the machine during its movement.
A drive wheel 23 is keyed to each of the axles 8 and 9 and has formed upon the periphery thereof a plurality of blades 24: for a purpose to be laterV explained.
A casing 25 surrounds each of the wheels 23 and is provided .with an inlet and an outlet opening 26 and 27.
A pipe 28 is connected to each of the inlet openings 26 and with the compressed air tanks 12 or 13.
Each pipe 28 is provided with a valve 29 controlled alternately by a connecting rod 30 and lever 31. This rod and lever connection is such that upon the movement of the rod in one direction such as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing the valve 29 at the rear end of the machine will be opened permitting the compressed air to liow out of the pipe 15 through the pipe 28 and into engagement with the blades 24: and the rear wheel 23 thus causing the rotation of the rear axle 9 and wheels 30 keyed thereon.
Vhen the position of the lever 31 is reversed the air will be forced out of the front consumer tank 12 and in a similar manner will cause the operation of the front wheels for the purpose of propelling the machine.
The purpose of these tanks operating alternately as above referred to is to have one tank at all times full of compressed air so that as the air diminishes the operation of the lever will always keep one of said tanks full of air and thus insure the propulsion of the machine.
In addition to the parts above referred to the machine may be modeled after an automobile of usual construction and is provided with the usual fenders 31 and running lights 32.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it will be manifest that a coaster is provided which will fulfil all of the necessary requirements of such a device, and it should be understood in this connection, that various minor changes in the specific details of Construction can be resorted to Within the scope of the appended claims, Without departing from the spirit or saericing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus fully described the invention what I claim vas new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
l. In a machine of the character described a bodyvportion, compressed air tanks mounted thereon, Wheels supporting the body portion,driving connections between the compressed air tanks and'w reels, andvmeans for alternately operating -said driving connections.
2.
