To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT T. HERB, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsbur h, in the county of Allegheny and State 0 Pennsylvania, have made a new and useful Invention in Geared-Turbine Installations, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to turbine apparatus and particularly to turbines adapted to be employed for marine propulsion. In marine and particularly in naval installations the space available for propelling apparatus is limited and consequently it is necessary to develop a maximum amount of power 111 a minimum amount of space. The illustrated embodiment of the invention includes a compound turbine having a high pressure and a low pressure section, both of which are geared to the same shaft by means of separate pinions and a common driven ear. The apparatus also includes a con enser which is located immediately below the low pressure section and it may include a cruising turbine which may be girectly connected to the high pressure tur- The apparatus illustrated includes a high pressure section 3, and a low pressure section 4. The high pressure section is shown opera tively coupled to a pinion 5 by means of a clutch or coupling 6, and the low pressure section is shown operatively connected to a pinion 7 b means of a clutch 0r coupling 6'. Both t e inions 5 and 7 mesh with a gear 8 which 1s operatively coupled to or mounted on the propeller shaft 10. In the drawin the low pressure section is shown as a den le flow section and where a double flow section is employed the casing will, of course, be provided with two exhaust ports, both of which will communicate with the inlet port of the condenser.
As diagrammatically shown the condenser is provided with a condensate .offtake port 14: located in the lower portion of its shell, and adapted to communicate with a condensate pump 30, located below the condenser.
In Fig. 2 I have shown a cruising turbine 16 geared to the shaft of the high pressure section 3, by means of a gearing 19. It will, of course, be understood that the cruising section may be directly connected to the section 3, or that it may drive a separate pinion which also meshes with the gear 8.
With the arrangement of apparatus described each so arate section is not only independent anf capable of being operated independently in case of an accldent, but by providing the ordinary divided casing the interior of each section is readily accessible.
Either or both the hi h and low pressure sections may be provi ed with the usual form of reversing sections, or a separate reversing section ma be employed.
For the purpose 0 increasing the power delivered to the propeller shaft, a unit similar to the unit just described may be arranged to transmit power to the ear wheel 8. In the drawin s I have i ustrated such a unit as inclu ing a high pressure section 23, a low pressure section 24 and a separate condenser 26 serving the low pressure section. I have also shown a cruising section 29 geared to the shaft of the section 23.
It will be understood that each unit may be divided into three or more sections, each drivin' a separate pinion which meshes with t e gear 8. In the drawings, which represent a marine installation, I have shown a circulating pump 29 for the cooling water of both condensers and a condensate discharge pump for withdrawin condensate from both condensers. It wilfi of course, be understood that a separate pu may 'be employed.

What I claim is:
1. a, marine turbine, a driven gear a turbine unit located on one side of 't'e gear, and comprising a high pressure and a low pressure section, one located below and on one side of the axis oi the gear and the other above and on the other side of the axis 0 'the gear, a passage connecting one side of the axis of the gear, a low pressure section located above and on the other side of the axis of the gear, a condenser located below the low pressure section, a passage connecting said sections, and separate pinions driven by saidsections and meshing with said gear.
3. In a marine turbine, a driven gear, a turbine unit located in front of the gear and comprising a high pressure section located below and on one side of the axis of the gear, a low pressure section located above and on the opposite side of the axis of the gear, a pipe connectin' said sections, a similar unit located behin the gear, and separate pinions driven by said sections and meshing with said gear.
4. In a marine turbine installation, a driven gear, a turbine unit located in front of the gear and comprising a high ressure section located with its axis be ow the axis of the gear and on one side thereof, a low pressure section located with its axis above the axis of the gear and on the other side thereof, a pipe connecting said sections, a condenser located immediately below the low pressure section, a similar unit and condenser located behind the gear, and separate inions driven by said sections and mes ing with said gear.
5. In a marine turbine installation, a driven gear, a turbine unit located in front of the gear and comprising a high pressure section located with its axis below and on one side of the axis of the gear, a low pressure section located above and on the other side of the axis of the er, a ipe connecting the turbine sections an passing above and across the axis of the gear, an expansion joint therein, a condenser located immediately below the low pressure section, a similar unit and condenser located behind the gear, and separate pinions driven by said sections and meshrng with said gear.
6. In a marine turbine installation, a driven gear, a turbine located in front of the gear and comprising a high pressure section located below and on one side of the axis of the gear, a low pressure section located above and on the opposite side of the axis of the gear, a pipe connecting said sections, a condenser located below the low pressure section, condenser auxiliaries located below said condenser and in part directly below the axis of the ear, a similar unit and condenser located behind the ear, and separate pinions driven by Said 590$ 011s and. meshing with said gear,
and comprising a located below and on one side of the axis 5 of the gear, a low pressure section located above and on the opposite side of the axis of the gear, a, pipe connectin' said sections; a similar unit located behin the gear, and separate pinions driven by said sections and meshing with said gear, the pinions of each unit being disposed with relation to the said gear substantially diametrically opposite one another.
