To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Joint M. Luann, a citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rolls or Wheels for Roller-Skates, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a metal roll, or wheel, particularly intended for use on roller skates.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved metal roll, or wheel for roller skates, of simple and inexpensive construction.
My invention consists in certain novel features of construction of my improved roll, or wheel, as will be hereinafter fully described.
My improved roll, or wheelis made in two separate parts which are secured together, each of said parts comprising the tread of the roll, which is recessed or cupped on one side and has a central opening therethrough with an inwardly extending annular lip or flange on its inner edge, and the body or central part, in the form of a disk, made separate, and extending within the tread part, and having'its outer edge ofiset outwardly to form a recess to receive and hold the lip or flange on the tread part, and having its inner edgeoffset outwardly to form a recessed or outwardly cupped portion 'to receive and hold. the ball bearings, with a central opening therethrough to receive the shaft or stud. In assem ling the parts of the roll or wheel, the two tread parts have the lips or flanges thereon abut against each other, and the two body or central parts abut against each other, and said central parts are riveted, or secured togather to make the complete roll, all as will e hereinafter fully described.

.In the accompanying drawing, '1 is the central shaft or stud of the roll, having a central longitudinal opening 1 therethrough to receive the axle of the roller skate, not shown. The stud 1 has a circumferential groove or recess in its periphery, see Fig. 2, to receive the metal balls 2, in the usual and well knownway.
3 are the two tread portions of the roll, each of which is pressed or formed in cross section of the shape shown in Fig. 4, with the central openin 3 therethrough, and on its inner edge the lnwardly extending annular lip or flange 3" around said opening.
4 are two disks, made separate from the tread parts 3, and forming the central part or body of the roll. Each disk 4 has a central openin 4 therethrough to receive the stud or sha t 1, and each disk 4 has its inner edge ofl'setoutwardly to form the cup or depressed portion 4", shown in Fig. 6, to receive and hold the balls 2. Each disk 4 is made with an offset outward edge shown at 4", Fig. 6, to receive and extend over the lip or flange 3" on the tread 3, as shown in Fig. 2.
Each disk 4 is provided in this instance with four ,holes 4" therethrough, to receive the rivets 5, which in this instance secure the two disks 4 together, and also secure the two tread parts 3, between the ofiset edges 4 on said disks, as shown in Fig. 2.
In assembling the parts of my roll or wheel, the two tread parts 3 are put together, with the inwardly extending annular lip or flange on their inner edge abutting against each other, as shownin Fig. 2. One of the disks or central parts 4 is placed within the cupped portion of one of the tread parts 3. The stud 1, is inserted through the central opening 4' in said central part, and the balls 2 are placed within the outwardly extending cupped portion 4", and enter the circumferent-ial groove or recess in the stud 1. The second disk or central part 4 is then placed within the'cupped portion of the other tread part 3, and the two central portions 4 abut against each other and are secured, in this instance, together by the rivets 5 extending through the holes 4, as shown in Fig. 2. The advantages of the construction of my improved roll or wheel will be readily appreciated by those skilled in the art.
The roll proper is made in four separate parts, comprising two tread parts, and two central disks or body parts, the two tread parts being of the same shape, and the two central parts or disks being of the same shape. wardly cupped or depressed parts for the ball bearings, and also have outwardly ofiset edges for the flanges on the tread parts. The riveting or securing together of the two central parts or disks, acts to secure together the two tread parts.
It will be understood that the details of construction of my improved roll or wheel may be varied if desired.
