Be it known that we, Gnonen vH. RED- MoNn, DAVID R. I'IARRIMAN, Jr., and OLIVER L. RICHARDSON, citizens of the United States, residing at Griffin, in the county of Spaldmg and Stateof Georgia,'have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bobbin or Quill Cleaning Attachments for Looms and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and usethesame. 1 q,

The arms 4 and 6 and the shaft or pivot 5 constitute a bell crank, and the said arm 6 is connected by a longitudinal rod 7 with an upper arm 8 of a, shaft 9 mounted in suitable'bearings of a girt or supporting member 10, on which the said shaft or pivot 5 is also mounted. The girt or supporting member 10, which is arranged at an inclination, is secured at its upper end to the frame of the machine and its lower end is provided with an eye or bearing 11, through which passes the loom shaft 12. The shaft 9 which is disposed perpendicular'to the inclined girt or supporting member, is set at a slight inclination and the upper arm 8 is disposed transversely and extends inwardly, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, and the said shaft 9 is also equipped at the lower end with an arm or lug 13 arranged to engage a laterally movable outer section 14, which is pivoted to an inner section 15 of a longitudinally disposed inner arm of a transverse shaft 16. The outer arm 14 is connected to the inner arm 15 by a suitable pivot 17 and it is normally maintained in angular relation thereto by a spring 18, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 8 of the drawings. This spring, which may be mounted in any desired manner, is connected with the relatively fixed and movable sections in any desired manner. \Vhen the attachment is actuated by the feeler mechanism the inclined arm 1 is moved upwardly a short distance and motion is communicated to the lug or arm 13, which swings the movable section 14 inwardly in alinement with the relatively fixed section and into the path of a rotary lug or cam 19 of the loom shaft 12. The loom shaft 12, in its rotary movement, carries the lug or cam 19 into engagement with the arm and swings the same downwardly partially rotating the shaft 16 and causing an upward movement of an outer arm 20, which is carried by the said transverse shaft 16.
The arm 20, which is arranged in substantially horizontal position when the attach.- ment is in its normal position, is provided at its outer end with a slot 21 receiving a pivot, which connects the upper end of a link or rod 22 to the said arm 20 of the transverse shaft 16. The lower end of the link is connected by a Suitable pivot 23 with the lower portion of a vertical reciprocatory rod or member 24 whose lower end is arranged in a suitable guide 26 and whose upper end carries a stripper 2-7, and the latter is adapted to receive a quill or bobbin 28 as the same is forced out of the chamber -of the shuttle by a full quill or bobbin.
The guide 26 is attached to the usual loom rocker-shaft 26' so as to rock therewith in unison with the lay.
The vertical reciprocatory guide rod or slidable rod or member 24 has an offset portion to avoid interference with the mechaposition by coiled springs 34, which are mounted on the head or enlargement 31 and which are located at opposite sides of the pivot 32. The jaws have upper engaging portions which are provided with inner curved relatively sharp edges 35 adapted to embrace the quill or bobbin for stripping the yarn or other material therefrom. The jaws are rovided with upper diverging edges 36 orming a mouth or entrance to the space between the engaging edges 35 and adapted to enable the jaws in the upward movement ofthe device to engage the quill or bobbin and be spread by the same whereby the device is adapted to seize and hold the same as the bobbin is forced out of the bobbin chamber of the shuttle by a full quill or bobbin. The upper guide 25 is provided with a projection, preferably formed by a screw 37 or other suitable device,.which engages a spiral groove 38 and is adapted to produce a rotary movement of the stripping device simultaneously with the upward as well as downward movement thereof whereby the stripping device is adapted to engage the quill or bobbin in the shuttle box and carry the same downwardly and simultaneously rotate the quill 0r bobbin to turn the same from a transversely disposed position with relation to the loom to a longitudinally disposed position with respect thereto. The lay 40 of the loom is designed to be cut away sufii ciently to permit the said upward and downward and rotary movement of the quill or bobbin. The upper guide 25 is preferably in the form of a stripper standor bracket to enable it to be readily mounted on the loom, as clearly shown in Fig. 5 of the draw ings, but the parts may of course be mounted in any other desired manner as will be readily understood. It'is located directly heneath the shuttle box to enable the stripper or stripping deviceto move upwardly into r the said shuttlebox, as clearly shown in Fig. 5. lVhile a single spiral groove and engaging projection is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, the spiral groove may be duplicated or any equivalent mecha- I ceive the quill or bobbin as the same is forced out of the shuttle by the'full quill or the lay 40. This places the quill in position to be cleaned by the stroke or m vement of the lay. The lay not having sufiicient stroke to drive the quill or bobbin clear of the yarn, the following mechanism is provided for supplementing the action of the lay. The quill or bobbin now being in position and the lay moving backward the small end of the quill is carried into a centering concavit 42 of a quill pushing head 43 carried y a rod 44, .which is mounted to slide in a' suitable stationary tubular bracket 45. The concavit guides or centers the quill or bobbin an the said bracket is provided with a central pamage 45 for the reception of said push rod or plunger 44, which is actuat d by a cam 47 of the crank shaft 48 of the loom. The cam 47 engages a curved arm 49 pivoted at the. lower end at 50' and presenting a concave edge to the cam and provided with a curved longitudinal slot 50, which receives a laterally projecting pin 51 of the push rod or plunger 46. The push rod cooperates with the lay in forcing the quill or bobbin through the stripping device. The quill is forced out of the stripper and the operation of cleaning the yarn from the quill or bobbin is comleted in one stroke or revolution of the com, placing the quill or bobbin in the can 'ing the upward movement of the same so as to produce a rapid downward and turning movement of the strlpper in carrying the quill or bobbin out of the shuttle box and in positioning the quill or bobbin to be engaged by the reciprocatory member 43.
What is claimed is; a
" 1. A bobbin or quill cleaning attachment for looms including a stripping device, means for moving the same inposition to receive the quill or bobbin as the same is forced out'of the shuttle by a, full bobbin,

A bobbin or quill cleaning attachment for looms including a stripper provided with relatively movable yieldable engaging jaws adapted to embrace a quill or bobbin and strip the yarn therefrom, mechanism for moving the stripperinto position to receive the quill or bobbin from the shuttle when the quill or bobbin is forced out by a full quill or bobbin, and means for imparting relative movement to the stripper and the quill or bobbin to effect a cleaning of the latter.

A bobbin or quill cleaning attachment for looms including a stripper, means for mounting the same on the lay of a loom below the shuttle box, mechanism controlled by the feeler mechanism of the loom for moving the stripper into and out of position to receive the quill or bobbin as the same is forced out of the shuttle by a full quill or bobbin, and means for imparting relative movement to the stripper and quill or bobbin to effect a cleaning of the latter automatically.

A bobbin or quill cleaning attachment for looms including a stripper, means for mounting the same below the shuttle box, means for moving the same upwardl and downwardly into and out of the shutt a box and for partially rotating the stripper to turn the-quill or bobbin after the same is removed from the shuttle box, and means located in the path of the quill or'bobbin' for forcing the same through the stripper, and means controlled by the feeler mechanism of the loom for throwing the stripper actuating mechanism into operation.
10. A bobbin or quill cleaning attachment for looms including a stripper, means for mounting the same below the shuttle box,
downwardly into and out of the shuttle box and for"partially rotating the stripper to turn the quill or bobbin after the same is removed from the shuttle box, means located in the path of the quill or bobbin for forcing the same through the stripper, and means controlled by the feeler mechanism of the loom for throwing the stripper actuating mechanism into operation, said means including'an arm connected with the feeler mechanism shaft, a rotary element connected with the loom, an arm or lever having a movable section normally located out of the path of the said rotary element of the loom, and means actuated by the arm of the feeler mechanism shaft for moving the said movable portion of the arm or lever into the path of the rotary element of the 11. A'bobbin or quill cleaning attachment for looms including a stripper, means 'for mounting the stripper beneath the shuttle box of the loom, means for moving it upwardly and downwardly to carry it into and out of the shuttle box, said means being controlled by the feeler mechanism, and means for automatically rotating the stripper durmg such upward and downward movement wardly and downwardly, a transverse shaft 'having an arm connected with the stripper for moving the same upwardly and downwardly, an arm or lever having a movable section, a rotary cam actuated by the loom, and, mechanism controlled by the feeler mechanism of the loom for moving the said movable section into the path of the cam for causing the latter to actuate the stripper.
14. The combination with a loom, of a stripper mounted on the lay and adapted to engage the quill, and means cooperating with the quill during the movement of the v lay to thus cause the stripper to function.
15. The combination wlth a loom, of a stripper mounted on the lay and adaptedto engage the quill, and means cooperating with the quill during the movement of the lay to thus cause the stripper to function, said means embodying a reciprocable member and means for reciprocating it .in the opposite direction .to the movement of the lay during the stripping action.
16. The combination with a loom, of a stripper mounted on the lay and adapted to engage and hold the quill as-the quill is discharged from the shuttle by the replenishing mechanism, devices "whereby the qulll may be rotated to a position at right angles to the shuttle-race, and devices co-aoting with the quill for causing the stripper to function while in such position.

The combination with a loom, of a stripper mounted on the lay of the loom in position to receive the [111111 ejected from the shuttle, means for automatically causing a relative movement of the stripper and the uill during the operation of t the lay to t ereby stri the -,qu1ll without stopping the operation of the lay. means co-acting with the stripper whereby the subsequent'operation', of the loom performs a stripping operation, said means embodying a reciprocating member adapted to engage the end of the quill and assist in causing endwise movement of the quill with respect to the stripper.
19. The combination with a power loom,
\ of a stripper mounted on the lay, means anto receive the ejected quill and position it parallel to the sides of the lay, means for rotating the stripper to swing the uill to an angular positlon with respect to t e lay, and means engaging the quill and cooperating with the stripper whereby the movement of the lay causes the stripping of the quill.
