ATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT H. BOYD, OF LONDONDERRY, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN TUBS FOR WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l3l,%4, dated September 10, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT H. BOYD, of Londonderry, in the. county of Guernsey and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Tubs for Washing-Machines, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon. V
, The nature of my invention consists in providing the inner walls and bottom of a tub with a metallic lining, corrugated, and made in sections, which are secured and held together with relation to each other and the body of the tub, as hereinafter described.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe more fully its construction.
In the accompanying drawing, which forms part of my specification, Figure 1 is a top view of my improvement in tubs for washingmachines. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same at line 00 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar section at line y of Fig. 1.
A represents an ordinary wash-tub, the inner side walls of which are recessed from the point e to the bottom. In this recess of the inner wall of the tub is placed a metallic lining, B, corrugated, as shown in Fig. 1, the upper edge of the lining being overlapped by the The lower edge of the lining B is provided with a groove or rabbet, indicated at w. Into this rabbet or groove is fitted the outer edge of the bottom lining 0, having corrugations arranged at an oblique angle to lines on a horizontal plane radiating from the center of the bottom. The depth of the corrugations in the side lining B and bottom lining G I leave to the taste and judgment of the manufacturer. In the center of the bottom lining O is a washer or nut, 01, which is used, in connection with the screw f, for the purpose of clamping the lining G, at its center, firmly to the wooden bottom 1) of the tub A. The side lining B and bottom lining O are made in sections, fitting together at lines radiating from the center of the tub.
In constructing the metallic lining of the tub I take a sheet of zinc and mark it out by means of suitable patterns for the different sections. Having formed the sections, which should be sufficiently large to allow for the corrugations, I then, by means of a suitable die for the side lining, provide the said sections with the desired corrugations and curve, and recess or rabbet their lower ends. The sections for the bottom are also corrugated through the medium of a suitable die, forming a recess at their inner end for the washer or nut d, the upper surface of which is also corrugated, so as to correspond with the corrugations of the bottom lining. The bottom lining may be formed of a single circular sheet; but it will be more practicable to make it in sections, as described. The sections forming the side lining B are placed in the recessed portion of the side walls, and then the sections forming the bottom lining are arranged in position, with their outer ends placed in the recess at m, and when all the sections are placed in juxtaposition, they are fastened at their inner end to the bottom D of the tub through the medium of the nut or washer d and screw f, after which the various sections are soldered together at their point of union.
Having thus described the nature and construction of my improvement, what I claim as of my invention, is
A tub for washing-machines, the inner side wall and bottom of said tub provided with a metallic lining, corrugated, and made in sections, which are secured and held in position with relation to each other and the tub, substantially as hereinbefore described, and for the purpose set forth.
