Description
o. H. s'rEvENs.- l Improvement n Churns. No..l31,231. 4 Patented sep.1o,1872.
UNITED STATES PAE DANIEL H. STEVENS, OF ENOSBURG FALLS, VERMONT.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHURNS.
Specification forming.,T part of Letters Patent N0. 131,231, dated September 10, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
To all whom it may concern:
and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvement in Ghurns and the Mechanism for operating the same; and the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a top view of the churnframe and mechanism for operating it. Fig. 2 shows a side elevation of the same.
My invention relates to butter-churns, and it consists in the folding and jointed levers for holding the lids or cover on the churn and the churn in its place in its connection with the frame, so that the dasher will work vertically and freely.
To enable others to make and use my improved churn I will describe it, referring to the drawing and the letters marked thereon.
The churnAis of the ordinary dasher kind, and is supported on a platform, B, that is hinged to the base-block C at one end ofthe frame D, so that it will fold up against the frame compactly when not in use. The lid of the churn a and also the churn A are held in their place by the two jointed arms E E, which are hinged to the vertical posts or standards of the frame D. By turning them down at a right angle, so that their lower ends rest upon the lid or cover a of the churn, the jointed arms E E are held in position by rod-braces e c to hook into staples c c on the top of the arms. To the top of the vertical posts of the frame is fitted a cap and guide, in which is secured an adjustable post, F, for the walkingbeam Gr to work in, one end of which is connected to the dasher-rod y, and the other with the pitman 7L, which connects with the expansile crank E to operate the churn. On one end of the crank-shaft j is placed a fly-wheel,
K, to give momentum and equalize the motionof the dasher, and on the other end of the shaft a hand-crank, J, may be placed to operate the churn for ordinary or small dairies; or, instead of the crank J, a band-wheel or pulley may be put in its place to operate the churn by other than man-power.
What I claim as my invention is- The jointed arms E E, with their braces c c for holding the lid or cover a on the churn,
and the churn A on the platform B, as herein shown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereinito subscribe my name.
- DANIEL H. STEVENS.
