To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, GEORGE Gnovnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of South Norwalk, county of Fairfield, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cook big-Baskets; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in a cooking basket, and it has for its principal object to provide a wire basket collapsible or adjustable to fit different sizes of kettles and to support the food down in the cooking liquid or elevated thereabove.

The invention consists in forming each of the bottom and side wires and the encircling bands in sections and joining them by slip joints so that the sections may readily be ex tended or shortened to enlarge or decrease the capacity of the basket.

Describing the construction more in detail, the numeral 1 designates a small center ring from which radiates a plurality of Wires 2 constituting the inner sections of the bottom wires that have their outer sections 3 formed integral with the lower sections 4 of the side wires oi the basket. Each section 3 and its connected section 4 comprise portions of a single length of wire bent at right angles, or substantially so, and each end is shaped to form an eye 5 and 6, respectively. The outer end of each inner wire section 2 is formed with an eye 7 which, together with the eye 5, slidably receives th complemental wire section to provide a slip joint. The upper side sections 8 are formed at their lower ends with eyes 9 which likewise slidably receive, with the yes 6, the re spective complementalwire sections to provide vertically extensible slip joints.

A border ring or band 10 is threaded through the eyes 11, on the upper ends of the top side sections 8, and is made sectional, the ends of each section terminating in eyes 12 through which the adjacent ring sec-- tions slide to afford expansion and contraction of the ring. Reinforcing rings or hands 13 are secured to certain of the upright side wires as by solder, and the rings too are sectional and variable in size by reason of the terminal eyes 14: slidab-ly receiving the adjacent ring sections.

It is to be noted that the slip joints of the rings 10 and 13 loosely straddle or embrace the adjacent side wires, and that the slip joints of each ring are staggered relative to the other ring slip joints and therefore embrace ditt'erent side wires. Thus, the rigidity of the wire basket is greatly increased and the regular spacing of the Wire frame members is maintained.

In use, the basket is suspended as by a bail, (not shown) secured to the border ring 10, within the kettle after the cross sectional area has initially been adjusted through the instrumentality oi the bottom wire slip joints and the ring slip joints. The food contents of the basket may or may not touch the cooking liquid within the kettle, as the case maydemand. Thus, for instance, in cooking doughnuts and crullers, the side wires are extended through their slip joints so that the dough will be submerged in the boiling lard, while in instances wherein it is desired to steam the food, the side wires are shortened to hold the bottom of the basket elevated above the steaming liquid.

What is claimed is 1. A cooking basket formed of wire and comprising a bottom ring, radiating bottom wire sections secured thereto and formed at their outer ends with eyes, upper side wire sections having lower terminal eyes, right angular wires having their respective portions constituting outer bottom wire sections and lower side wire sections and formed with terminal eyes which together with the foregoing eyes slidably receive the respective complemental wire sections and form slip joints by which the bottom and side of the basket mav be adjusted, and sectional expan sible rings encircling the side wires and having their sections connected to certain of the latter and terminating in eyes to form slip joints, the slip joints of one ring being stag gered relative to the slip joints of another ring and each joint loosely embracing a respective side wire.

A cooking basket formed of wire and comprising a bottom ring, radiating lmttom wire sections secured thereto and formed at their outer ends with eyes, upper side wire sections having lower terminal eyes, right angular wires having their respective portions constituting outer bottom wire sections and lower side wire sections and formed with terminal eyes which together with the foregoing eyes slid'ably receive the respective complemental wire sections and form slip joints by which the bottom and side of the basket may be adjusted, and an adjustable band encircling the side wires and having connection with the upper side wire sections.

An adjustable cooking basket having its bottom formed of radially extensible connected wires, vertical side wires conneeted with the outer portions of the bottom wires, and an expansible ring encircling the side wires and comprising sections slidably connected together and secured to certain only of said side wires and movable relative to the other side wires.

4. An adjustable cooking basket having its bottom formed of radially extensible connected wires, vertical side wires connected with the outer portions of the bottom wires, and an expansible ring encircling the side wires and comprising sections having terminal eyes slidably receiving the adjacent portions of the adjoining sections, said ring sections secured to certain of said side wires and others of said side wires passing between the slidably connected portions of said ring sections.

5. A wire basket comprising a bottom formed of sectional wires, each section having a terminal eye receiving the complemental section and forming a slip joint affording adjustment as to the length of the wire, and a side for the basket comprising likewise extensible wires, and contractible rings encircling the side wires and embodying slip joints through which certain side wires extend, said rings secured to other side wires.
