Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 5, 1919.
To all whom it may concern: I Be it known that I, Rum: HANRIOT, a citizen of the French Republic, residing at 32 mechanism for the ascent or descent rudder or elevator of aeroplanes, arranged under such conditions that all the organs of this apparatus are placed in the interior of the fuselage.
This mechanism is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in elevation.
In this drawing a indicates the elevator which has to turn upon a horizontal axis at right angle to the direction of the apparatus. This motion is controlled as follows.
The control lever b, operated by the pilot oscillates about a fixed point 0. On both sides of this point of oscillation there are attached to this lever at e and at d on the one hand the cables ff, and on the other hand gg. These cables extend the length of the fuselage, suitably guided or conveyed by pulleys or other convenient arrangements, and are attached to the correspondings ends i and 7' of a rod it placed at the rear of the said fuselage, in the middle lane of the apparatus. The cables, f, 9 rod and the part of the lever I) included between d and e form the sides of a parallelogram.
At the upper end of the rod 71. there is articulated an adjustable coupling rod 70' formed of a steel tube, which rod is connected with a lever Z fixed upon the rudder a at the middle of the horizontal tube m which possesses the articulations.
This mechanism has been devised for the purpose of placing the controlling parts in the interior of the fuselage and thus avoiding all passive resistance.
What we claim is In combination with an aeroplane elevator a control mechanism comprising a control lever pivoted near its lower end on the aeroplane frame, cables attached to said control lever respectively above and below the said pivot and extending the length of the fuselage, a vertical rod at the rear of the fuselage pivoted at its center to the frame in its longitudinal axial plane, and having the aforesaid cables attached to its upper and to its lower end respectively, and an adjustable connecting tube attached at its front end to one end of the aforesaid vertical rod and at its rear end to a lever keyed on the rotatable axles of the aeroplane elevator.
