BITUMINIZED FABRIC.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT ABRAHAM, a citizen of the United States, residin at the city, county, and State of New Yor have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bituminized Fabrics, of which the following is. a specification.
My invention relates to an improved bituminized fabric for use in the manufacture of floorings and roofings.
In my previous Patent, No. 1,226,738, I have described and claimed a felted sheet composed of sea grass fibers, together with ra and paper fibers.
y present improvement consists in producing a felted sheet of sea grass and paper fibers alone. Such a felted sheet will be cheaper and will have a greater porosity than a sheet containing rag fibers.
In the manufacture of floorings and roofings the felted sheet is saturated with a suitable bituminous compound to produce the finished product. Prior to my invention it has been customary to use a felted sheet composed of paper fibers as a foundation for the material, but such fibers produce so dense a sheet that it is difiicult to properly saturate it with 'a bituminous material. I have found that by mixing sea grass fibers with the paper fibers this difficulty can be overcome. Such a combination of fibers produces a sheet in which the paper fibers are sufliciently loosened to permit of thor- 'ough saturation with the bituminous matter.
I have obtained good results b means of a mixture consisting of 40% 0 sea grass fibers and 60% of paper fibers, but I do not limit myself to these specific proportions as the relative amount of paper and sea grass fibers which may be employed may be varied considerably from the portions stated.
The sea grass fibers are used in their raw or natural state, that is, without being subjected to any previous chemical treatment. The sea grass and paper are mixed together and beaten to a pulp by means of a beating engine or other sultable apparatus in the manner well known to the art, and the stock is then formed into sheets of the desired size and thickness.
In using the sheets for the manufacture of floorings or roofings they are saturated with at least an equal amount by weight of melted bituminous matter. The saturated felt may be surfaced with a .bituminous coating of harder consistency than the saturating compound, or with other materials.
The term paper fibers as used herein means the fibers of paper made from mechanically ground or chemically treated wood pulp, without the addition of rag fibers and free from such fibers.
What I claim is:
1. A bituminized fabric comprising a felted sheet, composed of paper fibers and sea grass fibers, saturated with at least an equal amount by weight of bituminous substance.
2. A bituminized fabric comprising a felted sheet, composed of 60% of paper fibers and 40% of sea grass fibers, saturated with at least an equal amount by weight of bituminous substance.
