IMPROVEMENT IN GIL-BURNING STEAM-GENERATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,088, dated September 3, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT O. ELLITHORP, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Steam-Generators, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a longitudinal sectional view of my invention. Figs. 2, 3, 4, and 5 are details. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 4 is a crosssection through as m. Fig. 5 is a cross-section through y y.
This invention has relation to means for generating steam by heat derived from the combustion of gases or vapors arising from petroleum or other oleaginous substances; and it consists. in the construction and novel arrangement of the adjustable flame-passage or combustion-chamber, andin the combination therewith of other devices, all as hereinafter described.
. In the accompanying drawing, the letter A designates a locomotive to which my furnace and generator have been adapted. A repre sents the steam'-space; B, the water-space. 0 represents a fire-cylinder, extending the length of the boiler into the water-back. D represents the vertical water pipes or tubes, extending throughout the length of the main fire-flue C, and through the water-back. E
. represents the return fines or tubes, through which the non-combustible gases and substances may escape into the smoke-stack. At the front end of the fire-cylinder is the com bustion-chamber B, lined with a cylinder, F,
of fire-brick. G represents an inner cone of fire-brick, located within the cylinder F, and supported by lugs upon the bottom and sides of said cylinder in such a manner as to leave a circular tapering fire or air throat between its conical surface and the interior cylindrical surface of the lining F. This fire-brick cone is arranged to slide upon its lugs within the cylinder F, and is, therefore, capable of adj ustment to regulate the intensity of the flamedraft. H represents a cylinder of fire-brick, provided with a conoidal point. This fire-brick H is located concentrically with the fire-cylinder, leaving a space all around it for the passage of the flame. at the base and sides .of the cylinder H, to support it in position. These fire-brick cones, with the cylinder F, are designed to give form and direction to the highly-carbonized flame, and to collect and retain the heat therefrom,thus equalizing the same at times of variation in the draft. What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is--- 1. The combination of the fire cylinder 0 with the fire-brick cones G and H and the fire brick lining F, substantially as specified.
