resident of 42 Rue dAnjou, Paris, France, have lnvented new. and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Diminishing the Recoiloi Gun-Carriages, which invention is fully; set forth in the following specification.
This invention has for its object toprovide an improved apparatus for diminishing the recoil' of guns.
The improved apparatus is more particularly designed for use with gun carriage trucks designedto enable their guns to be firedfrom a railroad track.
* The improved apparatus when so used,
7 serves for diminishing-the recoil of the gun carriage truck along the railroad track, and
for returning the gun automatically into position for firing after the devices for trans- 'mitting the firing strains to the railroad I track have been raised off the latter.
An embodiment of this invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings in which Figurel is an elevation, ofa gun carriage: truck designed to enable its gun to be fired from a railroad track and showing in vertical longitudinal section an embodiment of the improved apparatus used in connection zontal section on the line II-II of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a vertical cross section drawn to a larger scale on the line III-III of Fig. 1.
According to this invention the gun carriage truck which may be constructed in any I deslredvmanner 1s 1n each case provlded with a series of retractable members E carried permanently by the gun carriage truck A. These members Eare adapted to move relatively to the gun carriage truck in such a manner as to be capable of being brought into contact with the railroad track when the gun is being fired, for the purpose of transmitting the firing stralns to said track. These members E are adapted to be raised rapidly out of contact with the railroad track for the purpose of returning the gun into position'for firing;

The casing C is located in front of the gun carriage truck. The fixing of the casing C may beefi'ected for instance by means of jaws K movable on axle pins is carried by the said casing. These jaws K can be moved into position to clamp the rails M by means of wedges L operated by means of screws L working in corresponding screw-threads formed in the casing Gr.- f T In the example shown, the improved apparatus for reducing the recoil and for returning the gunautomatically into firing position, comprises two brake cylinders D, D, located one on each side of a cylinder H wherein the piston F of the recuperator works. This cylinder .H communicates with two air chambers H H I k V The piston rods of the recuperator F and of thentwo brake pistonsG. are connected to the gun carriage truck girder A. in such a manner as to allow of the said truck recoiling along aportion of the track which may not be straight or horizontal.
For this purpose the means of connection comprises a connecting member I to which are fixed the rods of the pistons F and G. This connecting member I is jointed on an axle pin J constituting one of the ends of a traction bar N. The other end of this traction bar is connected by a ball and socket joint 0 to the gun truck girder A.
For firing, the supporting members E are brought into contact with the railroad rails M. The recoil is braked by the brakes D.
After the recoil, the members E are moved quickly out of contact withthe rails M.
The returning of the gun into firing position is then eflected automatically by the action of the recuperator H.
