AUTOMOBILE-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 15, 191.).
Application filed April 8, 1919. Serial No. 288,514.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAURENCE W. WELSH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore city, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automobile-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
The lock which is the subject matter of the present application for patent is designed for attachment to motor vehicles to prevent the theft or unauthorized use thereof, and in order that this object may be attained in a simple and effective manner, a novel and improved means has been provided for locking the clutch pedal of the car.
In order that the invention may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in said drawing,
Figure 1 is an elevation showing the application of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the lock detached; I
Fig. 3 is a plan view thereof;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged cross section on the line H of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 5 is a fragment showing a slight modification.
Referring specifically to the drawing, 10 denotes the foot piece and 11 the shank of a motor vehicle clutch pedal. The shank eX- tends up through a slot 12 in the foot board 13 of the drivers compartment as usual. As the foot piece is moved in the direction of the foot board or floor of the car when the clutchis to be actuated, it will be evident that the clutch can be held against actuation by providing a means for preventing a movement of the pedal in the direction of the foot board. In order to accomplish this, the following locking device has been provided:
To the top of an Ordinary padlock 14:, between the shackle 15 thereof, is fastened by a screw or other suitable means 16, a stop bar 17 having at one end a lateral bend or foot piece 18; or the bar may be provided with two foot pieces 19 as shown in Fig. 5. The bar pro ects from both sides of the padlock, the foot piece being on the longer projecting end.
In use, the shackle 15 is passed around the clutch pedal shank 11 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, which positions the bar 17 alongside said shank. The length of the bar is such that its foot piece 18 seats on the foot board 13 and its upper end abuts against the bottom or under side of the pedal foot piece 10; It will therefore be seen that the pedal cannot be depressed, this being prevented by the foot piece 18 engaging the foot board or floor 13 of the car, and the bar is securely fastened to the shank 11 by the padlock, the latter being located close to the pedal foot piece 10 so that it will be impossible to get the foot between the latter and the padlock to force the same OF.
The device is very simple but it effectually serves the purpose for which it is designed, and it can be easily applied or removed by the proper person in possession of the key to the padlock.
I claim:
A look for a depressible motor vehicle clutch pedal, comprising a padlock having a shackle extending from oneend thereof for engagement around the pedal shank, and an elongated rigid bar carried by the body of the padlock and extending transversely thereof and projecting from opposite sides to lie alongside the pedal shank, said bar being fastened to the body of the padlock between the legs of the shackle and to that end of the body from which the shackle legs extend, the fastening means being covered by the pedal shank when the padlock is applied thereto.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence-of two witnesses.
LAURENCE W. WELSH.
