To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DEMOSS D. MARCO'IT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Colbert, in the county of Spokane and State of \Vashington, have invented a new and useful \Vood-Sawing Device, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming thesubject matter of this application is adapted to be employed for sawing round timber square, and the inventiomaims to provide a portable structure of the kind above mentioned which will be peculiarly eflicient in sawing up small material.
The device contemplates the use of a band saw, and the invention aims to provide novel means whereby the saw may be supported and driven, novel means being provided for stopping the saw, at the will of an operator.
\Vith the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 shows in side elevation, a device constructed in accordance with the present invention Fig- 2 is a section on the line 2. 2- of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a top plan of the structure shown in Fig. 1, parts being broken away and parts appearing in section; and Fig. 4 is a section on Fig. 3.
The invention comprises avertical U the line 44 of shaped frame 1 including legs 2 and 3. The
leg 2 is received in a U shaped socket 4. A depending foot5 is received in the open I side of the socket 4 and abuts against the leg 2. The foot 5 and the socket 4 are held on the leg 2 by means of securing devices 6. The socket 4 has an outstanding lower bearing 7 and an outstanding upper bearing 8.
A vertical shaft 9 is journaled in the bearings 7 and 8. Collars 10 on the shaft 9, between the bearings 7 and 8, keep the shaft from moving "endwise. A pulley 11 is mounted on the shaft 9, below the bearing 7.

The leg 3 received in a socket 12 fixed to the leg by securing devices 14. The socket 12 has an outstanding lower bearing 15 and 16. In the bearings 15 and 16, a vertical drive shaft 17 is journaled. 17, between the bearings 16 and 17, prevent the drive shaft from moving endwise. A pulley 19 is secured to the lowerend of the drive shaft 17 below the bearing 15. A
band saw 20 is passed about the pulleys 19 and 11, the band saw operating vertically.
A pinion 21 is secued to the drive shaft 17 between the collars 18. The pinion 21 meshes into a gear wheel 22 journaled on a stub shaft 23 fixed to the outstanding bearing 15 of the, socket 12. A beveled pinion 24 rotates on the stub shaft 23 with the gear wheel 22. The beveled pinion 24 and the gear wheel 22 may be fashioned in one piece if desired. The beveled pinion 24 meshes into a beveled pinion 25 mounted to rotate on an axle 26 fixed in the bearing 15. The axle 26 projects on opposite sides of the lower bearing 15, and ground wheels 27 are journaled on the axle 26 at its extremities. A pulley 28 is journaled on the axle 26 and abuts against a collar 43 on the axle; The pulley 28 includes a hub'29, which, if desired, may be journaled in the'hub of the beveled pinion 25. The hub of the pinion 25 has a clutch member 32. A clutch member 30 is splined at 31 to the hub 29 of the pulley 28 and coacts with the clutch member 32 on the pinion 25. The clutch member 30 is shifted along the hub by a ring 33 pivoted at 34 to the fork 35 of an upright lever 36 fulcrumed at 50 on a bracket 37 carried by the leg 3 of the frame 1. Upwardly extended side bars 38 are secured at 39 to the leg 3 and are connected at their upper ends by a grip- 40. The side bars 38 are sustained at their upper ends by braces 41 connected at 42 to the frame 1 In practical operation, the pulley 28 is rotated by any suitable source of power (not shown), the wheels 27 being blocked as at i the clutch member 32 of the beveled pinion 25. In this way, the beveled pinion 25, at the will of an operator, may be connected to Collars 18 on the drive shaftthe driving pulley 28 or be disconnected therefrom. WVhen the beveled pinion 25 is rotatedfrom the pulley 28, the said beveled pinion drives the pinion 24 on the stub shaft 23, the beveled pinion 24 rotating the gear wheel 22, and the gear wheel 22 rotating the pinion 21, motion is transmitted to the drive shaft 17 in this way. When the drive shaft 17 is rotated, the pulley 19 is rotated and the band saw 20 is operated so that the timber may be cut up into blocks by the band saw.
The foot 5 limits the downward swinging movement of the leg 2 and parts carried thereby. The parts 38, and 41 form a handle whereby the machine may be tilted and trund'led about. The weight of the leg 2 and parts carried thereby will feed the band saw 20 downwardly on the timber.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. In a-device of the class described, an upstanding U-shaped frame; a shaft journaled on one end of the frame; outstanding upper and lower bearings on the other end of the frame; a drive shaft journaled in the upper and lower bearings; a band saw carried by the shafts; a pinion secured to the drive shaft; a stub-shaft fixed in the low bearing; a pinion journaled on the stubshaft and meshing into the pinion of the drive shaft, the pinion on the stub-shaft carrying a beveled gear; an axle mounted in the lower bearing; ground wheels carried by the axle; a beveled gear journaledon the axle and meshing into the beveled gear on the stub-shaft; and means movable on the axle and under the control of an operator for coupling the beveled gear on the axle with a source of power.
2. In a device of the class described, a frame; an axle mounted in one end of the frame; a shaft journaled on said end of the frame; a gear train including a driving member mounted on the axle, and means for operatively connecting the driving member with the shaft; a clutch interposed in the driving train; a second shaft journaled on the frame; a band saw operatively connected with the shafts; and ground Wheels on the axle.
3. In a device of the class described, a frame; av shaft journaled in the frame; an axle'carried by the frame and disposed at right angles to the shaft; intermeshingpinions, one of which is carried by the shaft, the other of which is journaled 0n the frame; a beveled pinion mounted to move with said other pinion; a beveled pinion journaled on the axle and meshing'into the first specified beveled pinion; a driving element journaled on the axle; a clutch forming a connection between the driving element and the last specified beveled pinion; a second shaft mounted on the frame; a band saw operatively connected with the shafts; and ground wheels carried by the axle.
