LIFE-PRESERVING SUIT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 1, 1919.
Application filed inne 6, 1918. Serial No. 238,535.
tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in lifepreserving suits, andhas for one of its objects the provision of a device of this character especially adaptable to keep the body dry and protect it from exposure while in the water, thus obviating death caused by the body becoming chilled or frozen. 1 i h Another object of this invention is the provision of a waterproof garment which can be conveniently and quickly put on so that the entire body will be protectedfrom exposure.
A further object of this invention is the provision of trousers having reinforcing means at the waist thereof adapted to cooperate with the lower edge of the body portion of the garment to establish a substam tially leak-proof connection therebetween.
A still further object of this invention is the provision of a life preserving suit of the above stated character, which will be simple, durable and efficient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
VVith'these and other objects in view, as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a. complete understanding of my invention, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which: i
Figure 1 is a front elevation of alife preserving suit constructed in accordance with my invention,
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same,
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view, taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a sectional View, taken on the line 44t of Fig. 2, illustrating a strap adapted to extend under the crotch of a per-:
son, v F 1g. 5 is a detail sectionalview, taken on the "111516 5-5 of Flg. 2, lllustratmg a hood or cap to the garment, and
Fig. 6 is a detail view, illustrating the manner of securing the strap to the waist portion of the garment.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral lindicates the body portion of a garment having sleeves 2 provided with integral mittens or gloves 3, which arepreferably lined with wool or fleece, as illustrated at 4, and which lining extends upwardly into the sleeve, so that the wrists of a personwill be keptwarm. The neck portion 5 is adapted to snugly fit the neck of the wearer and has formed thereon an ex tension 6, carrying a hood or cap 7 adapted tofit over the head, andis preferably lined with fleece or wool 8, so as to give Warmth to the head. The body portion of the garment is constructed of rubber or other elastic water-proof material, and the lower edge of the body portion of the garment has secured to the sides thereof straps 9, to which snap fasteners 10 are secured. Rings 11 are secured by straps to the body portion of the garment, as illustrated at 12, and are disposed in front and rear. The rear ring has connected thereto an elastic strap 13, which is adapted to be extended between thelegs and secured to the front ring 11,
i as illustrated in Fig. 4, to prevent the body portion of the garment from working upwardly.
The numeral 14 designates the trousers of the garment constructed of rubber or other elastic waterproof material consisting of the waist portion 15 and legs 16. The
leg portions 16 have integral feet portions 17, which are lined with fleece or wool 18 to give warmth to the feet. Soles 19 are secured to the feet portions 17 for reinforcing the same and protecting them while the per son wears the sameupon the deck of a ship or like place. i
The waist portion 15 of the trousers 14 is of an increased thickness, as illustrated at 20, and has embedded therein a band 21 constructed of aluminum, or other material suitable for the. purpose, and which band is transversely curved or of substantially oval shape to reinforce the trousers at the waist portion. Rings 22 are secured to the lower edge of the band 21 and extend 'VVhile I have shown and described the extcriorly of the trousers, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1, for the purpose of receiving the snap hook 10 and the strap 13. Suspenders or supporters 23 are secured to the inner face of the waist portion 15 of the trousers, and are adapted to be passed over the shoulders of the wearer for the purpose of supporting the trousers.
In applying the garment, the trousers are first put on and the suspenders or supporters 2-3 placed over the shoulders. The head is then inserted through the body port-ion 1 of the garment, passing the head through the neck portion 5, permitting the arms and hands to extend into the sleeves 2 and gloves 3. The lower edge of the body portion 1 of the garment is then pulled clownwardly over the increased or thickened por tion 20 of the trousers 14 and the snap hooks 10 connected to the rings upon the sides of the trousers. The strap 13 is then passed between the legs and fastened to the front rings, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 4, thus securely fastening the body portion 1 of the garment to the trousers 14:. The edge of the body portion of the garment being stretched over the increased or thickened portion 20 and the band 21 forms a leak-proof connection between the trousers and the body portion of the garment.
preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that mmor changes m construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
A life preserving suit including a body portion and trousers constructed of waterproof and elastic material, an enlarged portion formed on the waist portion of said trousers and adapted to have stretched thereover the lower end of the body portion, a metal reinforcing band embedded in said enlarged portion and transversely curved to retain said portion in shape, rings secured to said band and extending exteriorly of said trousers, fasteners secured to the lower edge of the body and engaging the rings, and a strap secured to the front and rear of the body portion and adapted to be passed through the crotch of the trousers.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
