Be it known that I, JOHN L. BnRGnUND, a
citizen of the have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Punches; `and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such` as will enable others skilled in theart to which it appertains to make and use the same.`
` This invention relates to certain` new and` useful improvements in a punching tool and more particularly to the pliertype in which a turretor hub is journaled on one of a pair of handles or levers and equipped with a peripheral series of radially disposed punches for selective operation upon the anvil that is carried on the other lever.
Means have heretofore been provided for holding the hub fixed ina predetermined position so that a selected punch will be disf` posed for striking upon the anvil when the hand levers are brought together, such means comprising a series of notches in the side face of the hub for engagement by a spring catch. In mounting the punches on the periphery of the hub it is essential that the periphery be most accurately drilled so as to locate the punches direct alinement with the respective notches. s This operation and method is exceedingly diflicult because there are as many notches as there are punches and these are so correlated that they must be formed with the utmost accuracy.
The principal object of this invention is, therefore, to simplify the construction and at the same time to obtain great accuracy without such heretoforeL and expensive methods ofmanufacture.
The invention furtherresides in thefea` tures of construction and the arrangements and conbinations of parts hereinaftertde` Specification of Letters Iatentg, i

vided with the` proper `figures` or characters for identifying the peripherally and ralindrical base portions 6 adjacent the periphery of the hub.
The hub-bearing lever 1 is oi'set so as to dispose the punches and anvil in a common which one end of the spring catch 8 is fixed, as by removable screws 9. This leaf spring 8 is extended out alongside thehub and has alater'al wing. 10 bent at right angles over the periphery of the hub. A notch or concave seat 11 is formed in the edge of the lateral wing 10 to receive the individual preferably the cylindrical base portions.
I Thus, only one notch is required in the present construction, this being in the spring catch which is the only element that must be accurately located to bring the single notchin the exact true position with respect to the cutting anvil. It is to be noted `that a very important feature resides in the fact that the notch centers on the punches No careful and accurate drilling of the holes in the hub periphery is neceslar reference to any other part of the punch. The hub "maybe rotated in either direction, and when the spring is engaged between two punches both will 'be held away from the anvil. i `Whatis claimed isz 1. In a punching tool, a air of levers handle portions and jaw portions, an anvil carried by j aw, radiallyextending punches fixed on the s peripheryof the `hub for selective coperaand a Spring catch secured `carries `the hub and provided with a notch which is in direct alinement with the anvil path of the punch bases when the whub is punches will engage with the notch and thereby be in direct alinement `With the anvil. s 2. In a punching tool, a air of levers pivctally` connected to provi e handle por- 110 serial No. 238,547. s

In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
