To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, TrM YPi:vwinign and j: HARRY E. BROWN, citizens ofthe United States, residing at Eldorado, in the county of Butler, State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Trap, of which the following is a specification. l
The subject of this invention is a trap intended for use in fishing plnngerrods, or other obstructions, from wells.
The main object of the invention isthe provision of means for gripping the smooth surface of a rod or other obstruction.
Another object of the invention is the pro vision of means for yieldingly forcing the gripping element toward operative position.
Another object of the invention is to provide maximum play for the gripping element.
The invention also contemplatesgenerally improving the construction and enhancing the utility of traps.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in thecombination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

The tubularmember 1 is drilled, as at 6,
to form a passage or bore communicating with the aperture 4: adj acent the shoulder 5 for the reception of the trunnions 7 of the clapper or grip 8. The main bore is of larger diameter than the bore 30. One end of the bore 6 may be enlarged and threaded for the reception of a short tubular socket 9, which receives one of the trunnions 7 and permits easy assembling of the device. The free end of the clapper 8 normally rests upon the shoulder 5, and this end is provided with a substantially V-shaped notch 10, the edges of which are preferably beveled.
A leaf sprlng 11 is riveted or otherwise securedwithin the tubular member 1, and
is arranged longitudinally of the member 1 to extend partially across the aperture 43. The free end of the spring 11 is preferably rolled, as at 12, and is positioned to engage the clapper, when the same is swung upwardly by a rod 13 or other obstruction entering the member 1, and force the clapper against such obstruction to grip the same.
The operation of the device is as follows The member 1 is threaded onto a section oftubing 2, and sections of such tubing are joined until the member has been lowered into the well to a sufficient depth to encircle the end of the rod or obstruction. As the member is lowered over the rod 13,the rod will push the clapper 8 and rock it upwardly upon its trunnions 7 which will allow the end of the rod to pass. By now drawing the member 1 upwardly from the well, the clapper 8 will, through the spring j 11 and the force of the upward pull, be p forcedto grip the rod tightly, the rod resting in the V-shaped notch. This will bend the rod over the edge formed by the shoulder 5 and will tend to firmly grip the rod and draw the same from the well.
The provision of the aperture 4 allows full swingof the clapper so that larger obstructions may readily be taken care of.
Having described the invention, what we claim as new and seek by Letters Patent, is A deviceof the class described comprising a tubular member provided with upper and lower bores, there being a side opening in.
the member,the lower bore being; of smaller I shoulder, said thickened part having a transverse passage communicating intermediate its end with the lower bore; a grip adapted tomove into the openlng and to rest on the shoulder, the grip havingtrunnions inserti- 10 ble into the passage byway of the bores;
and a removable member in the passage, the member cooperating with one trunnion.
