To (ZZZ whom it may concern: 1 1 Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. .I'IUICH- INsoN, a citlzen of the United States, resuling at Charleston, Charleston county, and
State ofSouth Carolina have inventedand discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Driers, of which the followingis a specification.
My said inventionconsists of an improved vals on which tubular'sections 17 are mountconstruction and arrangement of driers, its special purpose being to'providean apparatus for the drying of very light material, such as gypsum, graphite, or any similar substance, or any flufi y materialwhichmust be dried without subjection to a draft,
wherebya drier of such a type is provided that 1s very eflicient in results and convenient of operation, as well as comparatively inexpensive to install, all of Which as will be hereinafter more fully described a d olalmed. i w
Referring to the accomp udmwmgs which are made apart hereof and of which similar reference characters indicate simi lar parts,
Figure 1 is a top or plan view of an apparatus embodying my said invention,
Fig. 2, a side elevation,
Fig. 3, a cross section on the dotted line 83,
Fig. 4L, a cross section on the H, and i Fig. 5, a detail view showing one of the agitator plates in perspective.
In said drawings the portions marked A represent the supports, B the drier floor, or pans composing it, and C the hopper connected with the source of supply.
The frame comprises the supports A and has guide rails 10 for the chain carriers and may be of any appropriate construction and arrangement for the purpose. In the front of the apparatus is a furnace having grate bars 11 connected by horizontal flues 1:2 with a chimney 13 at the other end of the apparatus.
The drying floor B consists of a series of sections or pans adapted tofit together and over the top of the furnace and fines constituting the heating apparatus, as shown, making a continuous floor from one end of the apparatus to the other.
The feed hopper G is of any appropriate dotted line construction having a fluted, or angular in cross section, feed roller 14 111 its throat being adapted be operated bypowerfrom any convenient source andarranged to receive the material from any convenient or appropriate supply. It is located directly above the front end of the drier and is adapted to deposit material thereon. An agitator isprovided consisting of endless chalns 15, one on each side, carry I ing transverse rods 16 at appropriate intered each of which carries an agitator arin or plow 18 of substantially the form shown in Fig. 5.
other direction on the. adjacent rods so that the agitator fingers of alternz ttje rods project ri ht-hand direction and those on the next ro s in a left-hand dlrectlon and insure that bottom B from one end to the other. By referring to Figs. 1 and 2 this operation will" be clearly understood. The upper part of each endless chain 15 runs upon one of the side parts or supports 10 with the agitator fingers thereon hanging in a vertical position. They pass over the drum 20 at one end and the drum 21 at the other end by which the endless chain or apron is driven. The driving chain 22 connects with a sprocket wheel 23 on the shaft 24 of frame 21 and furnishes the driving power. Another sprocket wheel 25 on the shaft 26 of the drum 20 is connected by a sprocket chain 27 with a sprocket wheel 28 on the shaft 29 of the feeding roller 14 in the hopper C.
At the end of the drier I form a transverse trough 30 in which is mounted a spiral conveyer 31 driven by a sprocket chain 32 from any appropriate power.
In operation, the material coming from the hopper G is gradually fed to the drier bottom B by the feed roller 14 and is dragged from one end of the drier bottom to .the other by means of the agitator arms or plows 18 with their bent or angular ends 1 19, which operate to continually stir the material by moving it back and forth transat reverse angles orthose on one rod in a 1 the material willbe agitated, or turned, first 1n oi ie direction and then 1n the other and at the same time dragged along over the dr1er ing it finally into the trough from which it is discharged by the conveyer 31 to any convenient receptacle. a The agitator" arms drag upon the floor by reason of gravity the material being of such a light nature that comparatively light arms readily passv through the same, as: Will be readily understood. It will be understood of course that this drying apparatus is located in a closed room u hereit, will not be subjected to Wind, or draft and its operation is continuous as; above described,
The lengt of the apparatus be such as required to accomplish the result and in some instances fon-sdrne classes of worlg it will be readily seen that a longer drying surface is required than in ether. instances with other classes of worlg The length of the apparatus will therefore be modified to suit conditions and other modifications in details will readily'suggestthemselves and can be made Without departingfrom my invention.
Having thus fully described my said invention, WhatI claim as newand desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: 1. In a drier comprising a heater and provided'vvith a drier floor constructed over said heateigan agitator comprising an end-. less apron with agitator arms pivoted on transverse carri'ers at intervals and drag-.
d-ri'e rfbottom and carried from end to end thereof,- substantially as set forth,
'2.' Ina drier comprising a heater and provided with a drier floor constructed over said heater, an agitator comp-rising an end less apron with agitator arms pivoted at intervals on transverse carriers to drag thercfrom, said agitator arms being formed with angular ends and arranged a distance apart in rows extending across the drier floor the angular ends of the fingers in alternate rows being disposed in opposite directions, whereby the material is agitated back and forth across the drier bottom and carried from end to end thereof, substantially as set forth.
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal at Charleston, South Carolina, this 27th day of August, A. D. nineteen hundred and eighteen.
