Description

P. V. PARSY.
FURNACE FOR MELTING METALS.
Patented July 1, 1919.

I lQw Jaw Mag, "Amml PAUL vrcroza IPABSY, oE rA-nrs, FRANCE.
cnUcIBLE-rUENAc FOR nnnrine METALS..
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL VICTOR PARSY, of 5 Rue Jules Lefebvre, Paris, in the Republic of France, civil engineer, have invented Crucible-Furnaces for Melting Metals, of which the following is a full, clear,
I and exact description.
In most furnaces at present in use for melting copper, brass, or other metals, the crucible is embedded in a mass itself of burning coke.
This method of heating the crucible necessitates on the part of the melter a special professional skill in attending to the fire.
- ()n the other hand, the burning coke deteriorates rapidly the crucibles by the contact of these latter with the slag.
The present invention relates to a crucible.
furnace for melting metals constructed in such a manner as to obviate the inconveniences above mentioned.
The present kind of furnace is character ized essentially by the fact that it is heated by gas, with regeneration of the heat to heat the air supply, and that it comprises a combustion chamber and a smaller chamber arranged in such a manner that the flames may pass easily from the combustion chamber into the smaller chamber without being hindered by the residues of fusedmaterial or dross, which may be removed without impeding the working of the furnace.
By way of example, the invention is represented in the accompanying drawing which shows a vertical section of the present system of furnace.
As seen in the drawing, the furnace comprises a small upper or melting chamber a in which is placed the crucible Z). This small chamber a is closed at its upper part by a cover 0, and communicates, at its lower part, with a combustion chamber cl placed at a lower level. This chamber has an inclined surface 6 and it is closed by a door 7" arranged upon the outer face of the furnace.
In the lateral walls of the chamber 01 are arranged burners g communicating on one hand by the conduits h with a passage k leading the gas from a gas producer, and
on the other hand'by means of a conduit 11 with a heat retaining chamber 71 which is shown diagrammatically in the drawing and may be provided with fines or the like for i I Specification of Letters Patent.

leading the incoming air alongside of the outfl owing gases in any suitable or well known manner.
The burners g, which lead into the chamber cl, the gas coming from the passage k and the heated air coming from the heat retaining chamber 71, are placed at the upper part of the said chamber so that the flames may rise .into the small chamber or containing the crucible without being hindered by the matter which flows from this latter in the contrary direction upon the inclined surface 6, and which consists of the waste metal or dross.
In consequence of the high temperature of the combustion chamber d, this matter is maintained in a melted state and it accumulates in the bottom of the said chamber from which it may. be withdrawn through the door f. p
The combustion gases, after. having enveloped the crucible, are directed by the conduits j and 3' to the heat retaining chamber z' to heat the secondary air.
However, during the time necessary for pouring, when the cover 0 is removed, a free communication may be established with the chimney 70 by operating in any convenient manner the hell or valve 1. This operation of the bell Z enables a strong suction of the gases to be effected which facilitates the raising of the crucible.
The system of furnace which has just been described may be modified according to its applications while retaining the general arrangements to assure its practical operation.
I claim 1-- 1 In a crucible melting furnace the combination with a crucible and a melting chamber surrounding said crucible, of a combustion chamber located at a lower level than and connected by a sloping passage with the bottom of said melting chamber, gas and air conduits opening into the upper part of said combustion chamber, and a door for permitting the removal of molten matter from said combustion chamber.
2. In a crucible melting furnace the combination with a crucible and a melting chamber surrounding said crucible, of a combustion chamber located at a lower level than and connected with said melting chamher, said combustion chamber having an inclined Wall extending from the bottom therepreheat the air on its Way to the c0mbus- 10 of to the -b0tt0m'0f' said melting chamber, tion chamber.
