HOSE-CLASP.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EHsAN KARADAGHLI, a subject of the Shah of Persia, residing at Chatham, in the county of Morris and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hose-Clasps, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanylng drawings, which form a part thereof.
My invention relates to hose clasps and more particularly to a type thereof designed to prevent breakage of the threads of hose by the use of resilient pads adapted to co-act in clamping the material of the hose therebetween.
A clasp made in accordance with my invention, is so constructed that cushions or pads having cofiperating parallel surfaces may be closed upon the knitted fabric of the hose by a relative sliding movement of inner and outer plates carrying said cushions or pads, said plates being so constructed that this sliding movement will close the cushions or pads upon the hose. This closing action ordinarily will be affected by a manual movement of said plates, the ordinary stresses of use having a tendency, through the strains applied-to one of said plates by the webbing carrying the clasp, to insure the desired firm grip of the cushions or pads upon the hose.
To guard against a possible release of the clasp while in use, I provide one of the plates with a frame by means of which the clasp may be secured to the webbing of the garter, which frame is so constructed that it will act as a lock in relation to the plates carrying said cushions and thus prevent accidental longitudinal movement of one with relation to the other. i
The invention consists primarily in a hose clasp embodying therein an inner plate having a resilient cushion atone end thereof, a
loop carried by said plate and spaced away from said cushion, an outer plate passing through said loop and slidably mounted therein with relation to said inner plate, said outer plate having at one end thereof a resilient cushion adapted to engage the cushion upon said inner plate, and means whereby said outer plate may be connected to the webhing of a garter, and in such other novel features of construction and combination 01% parts as are hereinafter set forth and described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
Referring to the drawings,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hose clasp embodying my invention, the various parts being separated to more clearly disclose the construction thereof; and
Fig. 2 is a side view of the assembled clasp in the closed position.
Like letters refer to like parts in both of said views.
In the accompanying drawings, I have shown an embodiment of my invention consisting of two oppositely disposed plates, a and b, which, for convenience of description I have designated the inner and outer plates. Said plates a and b have secured to one end thereof respectively in any desired manner, a cushion or pad of soft rubber, or other rcsilient material, said pad carried by the inner plate a being shown at c, and the pad carried by the outer plate I) being shown at cl. Said pads project from their respective plates toward each other so that when the clasp is closed they will cooperat to clamp the fabric of the hose therebetween.
The plate a has secured thereto, adjacent but spaced away from the pad 0, a confining loop 6 through which the plate I) is passed when assembling the structure. The top of this loop is inclined in relation to the plate a 13516 highest point thereof beingtoward said pa 0.
By mounting the plate Z) in relation to the plate a in the manner described, one of said plates is slidable with relation to the other, the loop e in addition to normally holding said plates in the assembled position, serving to force the pads c and 03 together when the proper sliding movement is impar-ted to one of said plates, so as to firmly clamp the fabricof the hose between said pads. The outer faces of the pads c and d are oppositely inclined as shown, so as to develop the desired wedging action as the clasp is closed, while insuring a gripping area of said cushions or pads coextensive with the top surface thereof.
Toward the end of the outer plate 6, opposite that end carrying the pad cl, are downwardly turned lugs adapted to have a" sliding fit with the edges of the plate or and thus cooperate with the loop e in guiding said plates in their relative movement; and the end of said plate 5 adjacent said lugs is formed into a hinge socket 9 adapted to receive hinge pins it carried by a wire frame 71 by means of which the clasp is attached to the webbing z.
Adjacent the hinge pins 71 said frame 72 has secured thereto a metallic cross plate 9' having a down-turned edge j adapted, when the clasp is closed and stresses are applied to the webbing i, to engage the adjacent end of the plate a, and thus prevent the longitu dinal movement of the plates at and b with relation to each other, While the clasp is in use.
The plates a and b are of substantially rigid sheet metal, it being permissible to use stock sufficiently light to impart slight resiliency to said plates.
The operation of the herein described clasp is substantially as follows When a clasp made'in accordance with my invention, is clamped upon the hose, the parts thereof will be in the position shown in Fig. 2, the; loop 6 forcing the plates at and I) together and developing the desired clamping action of the pads 0 and (Z upon the fabric of the hose. iVhen the parts are in this position, the wire frame 72, will lay in substantially the plane of the plate 6, the downturned edge 3'" of the cross plate j extending at right angles to and in engagement with the end of the plate a in a manner to prevent said plate having movement toward the web 6, or the plate 5 having movement in the opposite direction in a manner to separate the pads 0 and (Z and thus relieve the clamping action.
When it is desired'to disengage the clasp from the hose, the frame is raised, the hinge pins 7b turning in the hinge socket 9 thus moving the down-turned edge j away from the end of th plate a and permitting a relative sliding movement of the plates-a and b. As the plates are thus moved in opposite directions, or one of them is moved in relation to theother, the plates at and Z) at the end thereof adjacent the pads c-cl, are permitted to separate in a manner to relieve theclamping stresses upon the pads c and cldeveloped by the pressure of said loo) 6 upon the plate I), and at the same time the .inclined faces of said pads will move away from each other longitudinally of the clasp. thus affording proper clearance for the escape of the fabric from therebetween.
In closing the clasp, the operation is the reverse of that of opening it, the relative movement of the plates a and 7) and the inclined wedge-like surfacesof the pads 0 and cleansing the loop 6 to force the pads c and (Z together, said pads pro'ecting from the face of the plates ('1- and: I) go an extent to cause said plates to diverge in the manner shown gether firmly upon the fabric, stresses ap plied to the webbing i will turn the frame it sufficiently to bring the down-turned edge 7'' across the end of the plate a in the manner above referred to.
It is not my intention to limit the invention to the precise details of construction shown in the accompanying drawings, it being apparent that such may be varied without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. 1 j
It is apparent that in a clasp made in accordance with my invention, the fabric is engaged between two parallel surfaces, and the threads thereof are therefore not subjected to any breaking or cutting stresses.
Having described the invention, what I claim as new and :desire to have protected by Letters Patent, is
1. A hose clasp embodying therein an inner plate having a resilient cushion at one endthereof, a loop carried by said plate and spaced away from said cushion, an outer plate passing through said loop and slidably mounted therein with relation to said inner plate, said outer plate having at one end thereof a resilient cushion adapted to engage the cushion upon said inner plate, the top surfaces of said cushions being oppositely inclined and adapted to engage each other, whereby relative movement of said plates will clamp the hose between said top surfaces by a wedging action, and means whereby said outer plate may be connected to the webbing of a garter.
2. A hose clasp embodying therein an inner plate having a resilient cushion at one end thereof, a loop carried by said plate and spaced away from said cushion, an outer plate passing through said loop and slidably mounted therein with relation to said inner plate, said outer plate having at one end thereof a resilient cushion adapted to engage the cushion upon said inner plate, the top surfaces of said cushions being oppositely inclined and adapted to engage each other, whereby relative movement of said plates will clamp the hose between said top surfaces by a wedging action, means whereby said outer plate may be connected to the web bing of a garter, and means preventing movement of said plates in relation to each other when the clasp is closed and in use.
3. A hose clasp embodying therein an inner plate having a resilientcushion at one end thereof, a loop carried by said plate and spaced away from said cushion, an outer mounted therein with relation to said inner plate, said outer plate having at one end. thereof a resilient cushion adapted to engage the cushion upon said inner plate, the co-acting surfaces of said cushions being oppositely inclined, whereby a Wedging action of said cushions with relation to each other is secured as the clasp is being closed, and a frame pivotally connected with said outer plate, whereby said outer plate may be connected to the webbing 01": a garter, comprising a plate carried thereby having a downturned edge adapted to engage the end of said inner plate when the clasp is closed, whereby the stresses applied to said webbing will prevent relative movement of said plate.
