To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FREDERICK NILLsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Eye-Protectors, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to eye. protection glasses adapted to protect the wearer against possible fracture of the lens, and more particularly to an improved lens-reinforcing construction of the type set forth in Willson and Bourquin Patent No. 1,161,100, Nov. 23, 1915;. the present invention being fully described in connection with the accompanying drawing and the novel features defined in the subjoined claims.

Figure 1 is a partly sectional view of an eye cup having my invention applied thereto; the clamped cup construction indicated corresponding with that shown in Patent No. 1,296,707, dated March 11, 1919, to which type of construction the invention is particularly applicable.

Fig. 2 is a plan view of my reinforced lens apart from the framing to which it is applicable; and Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view of the same on the line 33 of Fig. 2.

The lens-engaging framing or eye cup a, as indicated, is made from a rolled up piece of sheet material forming a split expansible lens holder, its meeting ends (Z (Z being clamped together by a clamping device C so as to grip the inserted lens D in the edgeengaging groove 6 of the framing. The present invention provides specifically novel and advantageous means for reinforcing the lens preliminary to and after its connection with the framing.

My improved lens-reinforcing ring, as shown, is formed of sheet metal, with an annular disk portion 6 adapted to bear flatly against the outer or marginal portion of the inner face of the lens D, and with an outer flange portion f adapted to engage the outer edge of the lens so as to attach the device to the latter and also to engage the groove 6 of the framing a for jointly securing the lens and its reinforcing ring to the latter. As indicated this flanged ring is spl t at 9 so as to permit of its ready applicatlon to the lens as shown, and also of its yielding to the clamping action of the split framing for insuring rigid connection of the assembled parts. Preferably the ring sectlon is reduced as at h, opposite the split g, so as to permit of free adjustment of the half-circle portions thereof to the engaged edge of the lens, though retaining suflicient strength at such weakened portion h, to grip the lens when applied thereto, independently of the clamping action of the framing to which it is adapted to be applied.

The combined lens and reinforcing ring as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, may advantageously form a single commercial product to be furnished to goggle dealers and others for application to suitable framings as required; the reinforcing ring serving to protect the glass in separate handling of such product,

as well as to most eifectually eflect such purpose when the latter is conveniently and rigidly secured thereby to the goggle framing.

What I claim is 1. An edge-reinforced lens for insertion in an eye-protector framing, comprising a lens and a split annular disk having a lens edge-engaging flange adapted to said framing and to retain the disk in reinforcing contact with a marginal face portion ,of the lens.

2. In an eye protector, a lens, a separately formed annular disk arranged in reinforcing contact with a marginal face portion of the lens and having a lens-edge engaging flange, and a lens framing retainingly engaging said flanged portion of the disk.

3. In an eye protector, a lens, a separately formed split annular disk arranged in reinforcing contact with a marginal face portion of the lens and having a lens-edge engaging flange, a split lens framing retainingly engaging said flanged portion of the disk, and clamping means for said split framing and disk.
