f `Be it known that' LRICHARD L. CUSHING,
afcitizen of the United States of America, residing at Tiskilwa, in the county of Bureau and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvements in Explosive Shells, of which the following is a specifica- 'l The invention relates to'explosive shells 'and seeks to providel as its principal object, a device of this kind comprising several compartments, one of which is designed to i lcarry shrapnel, another powder and stillanother gasolene, certain other compartments vll carrying unitsmade up of double containers I which carrygasolene and powder, the two latter being separate from each other. Standing in spacedrel'ation tothe plate 7 there is a further plate 8 vwhose periphery frictionally engages the Ainner walls of the tubular member 1. y y p vThe rear end of thecasing 1 is'closed by a plate 9 which is provided with a liole 10 and with acircular trench 11, one endof which lterminates'in the hole. i This hole 10 is designedto hold some quick acting powto be supplied with a fulminate. vConnecting with the rear end ofthe vshell 1 by threadingengagement with the latter, there is asecond "platev12 provided with ahole 13 havinga radial distance from the center of the plate equal to the radius on which the trench 11 is formed, the trench being concentrically disposed on the plate 9. The plates l2 and 9 together operate to form a time fuse, the angular adjustment' of the plate 12, to move its hole 17 toward and away from the hole determining the yinterval of time necessary for the operation of the fuse. The space in the shell 1 comprehended between the plates 8 and 9is designed toreceive the powder'charge 14. The tubular member 5 incloses the powder charge 15 and the tubular member 6 incloses gasolene. A fuse 16 connects the charge of powder 14 withthe c'harge`l5. Y
