MEANS FOR CONVERTING BASE-BURNER STQVES INTO SOFT-COAL HEATERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 5, 1918. Serial No. 265,359.
To all whom it may concern:

At the present time, hard coal is not read ily obtainable by the public and in order to make up for the deficiency, soft coal is.
used as a substitute, but the use of soft coal in hard coal burning stoves is objectionable because of the soot, black smoke and odor which attends the burning of soft coal in such stoves. The present invention is designedto be applied to any of the well known hard coal base burner stoves, thereby making it possible to burn soft coal in them without the hereinbefore mentioned objections. The invention consists in the several novel features hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in central, vertical section through a stove showing a simple embodiment of the present invention applied thereto; Fig. 2, is a fragmental plan of the top of the stove with my device applied thereto and Fig. 3, is a detail vertical section taken on line 33 of Fig. 2.
Referring to said drawing, the reference character 5, designates a hard coal base burner stove from which the magazine has been removed, which may comprise any of the well known stoves of this type, having the usual draft passages controlled by a damper 6. A stove pipe 7, is connected with the stove, as usual, and may contain the damper 8, as is customary.
In converting a stove of this type into a soft coal burner, the magazine of the stove is removed therefrom, and the usual plate or lid is removed from the top 9, of the stove. In the opening in the top of the stove is placed a plate 10, which is preferably cemented in place with stove putty to prevent gas leakage. Said plate has an opening 11, for the escape of the products of combustion and a flange 11 is preferably turned up at the margin of said opening 11. A stove pipe 12, extends up from said flange 11 and is connected to the main stove pipe 8, by a T joint 14. A damper 13, is placed in the pipe 12, to control the passage therein.
An air vent 15, is provided in the plate 10, which is controlled by a lid 17 preferably a flange 15 is formed around the margin of the air vent l5 and an air tube 16, is secured to said flange. Said air tube 16, extends down into the combustion chamber of the stove, and conducts air to the point of combustion.
In use, when starting the fire or when supplying additional fuel thereto, the lid 17 should be opened to admit an abundance of air to the place of combustion, the damper 13 opened and the damper 8 closed. Air is supplied at the proper place, and a direct escape for the products of combustion is provided by the pipe 12. After the dense smoke has disappeared, the damper 13, may be closed and the damper 8 opened permitting the products of'combustion to escape through the pipe 7 in the usual maimer. The supply of air to the top of the coal may be regulated with the lid 17 In actual practice, .it has been found that a more perfect combustion of the fuel results from the use of a converter of this kind, that the transparent panes in the stove doors are not blackened as with the ordinary use of soft coal in hard coal base burner stoves, and that a very eflicient heat is obtained with the use of soft coal in converted base burners. Moreover, the plates 10, may be readily cut to fit any size and shape of opening. in the top of the stove and the device may be quickly and easily installed and at a small expense, thereby economizing in the use of hard coal and obtaining a maximum heat supply and practically smokeless, from soft coal. The stove is adapted to be converted from a soft coal burning stove into a base burner stove by removing the plate 10 and parts connected thereto and replacing the magazine.
More or less variation of the exact details of construction is possible without departing from the spirit of this invention; I desire, therefore, not to limit myself to the exact form of the construction shown and described, but intend, in the following claims, to point out all of the invention disclosed herein.

I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In combination with a stove having an opening in its top adapted to receive a magazine, and adapted to be converted from a base burner stove into a soft coal stove, of converting means of the character described, comprising a plate adapted to be secured on the open top of the stove, and having an escape opening for the products of combustion and an air vent, and an air tube secured to said plate and extending down from said air vent.
2. In combination with a stove having an opening in its top adapted to receive a magazine, and adapted to be converted from a base burner stove into a soft coal stove, of converting means of the character described, comprising a plate adapted to be secured on the open top of the stove and having an escape opening for the products of combustion and an air vent, regulating means for said air vent, and an air tube secured to said plate and extending down from said air vent.

A soft coal burning device, comprising a stove, having a damper controlled smoke passage at its rear, and an opening in its top adapted to receive a magazine, said magazine being adapted to be removed to convert the stove into a soft coal stove, a smoke pipe extending from said smoke passage, a removable and replaceable plate covering said opening in the top of the stove, and having an escape openin for the products of combustion and an air vent, a damper controlled stovepipe extending from said escape opening in the plate and communicat ing with said first mentioned Stovepipe, and an air tube extending down into the stove from said air vent.
