WILLIAM S. TOTHILL, OF LOCKPORT, YORK.
NECKBAND FOR SHIRTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 27, 1919.
Application filed May 3, 1918. Serial No. 232,192.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILLIAH S. To'rHrLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lockport, in the county of Niagara and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Neckbands for Shirts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to neckbands for shirts of the kind in which the neckband includes a pocket or hollow portion into which a stiffening member may be inserted. v I The objects of this invention are to produce a stiffening member for a neckband of this kind which can be readily inserted or removed from the neckband and which will hold the neckband in the correct shape; also to provide a stiffening member of this kind with a back collar button which serves to hold the stiffening member in the neckband; also to improve the construction of neckbands in other respects hereinafter specified.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective rear view of the upper portion of a shirt showing a neckband provided with a stiffening member embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is an elevation of the stiffening member and the rear collar button.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the rear collar button detached from the stiffening member.
Fig. 4: is a perspective view of the neckband and stifiening member showing the stiffening member partly inserted into the neckband.
Figs. 5 and 6 are perspective sectional views thereof on lines 55 and 6-6, respectively, Fig. 1.
A represents the upper part of the body portion of a shirt and B represents the neck band which is secured thereto and which is made hollow to permit a stiffening member to be inserted. In the construction shown, the neckband comprises an inner portion 5 and an outer portion 1). These two portions of the neck band are secured together at their upper edges, and the, lower edges of the neckband are secured together at the front and sides of the neckband so as to form a hollow neckband. A part of the outer portion of the neckband at the rear thereof is not secured at its lower edge to the inner portion of the neckband, thus forming an opening 6 at the rear of the neckband which affords access to the hollow neckband. The
neckband may be formed in any suitable or desired manner and includes the usual front collar button holes 6 and the rear collar button hole 5 The means for keeping the neckband in its proper shape include a thin strip C of any suitable flexible, stiffening material, such, for example, as celluloid or the like, which may be inserted into the hollow neckband through the opening 19 therein and which is of sufficient width to fill the neckband. This stiffening member is provided with means for holding the same in position in the neckband, these means in the construction shown including a collar button D which is secured on the stiffening member and which maybe inserted into the back collar button hole to hold the neckband in place. In the construction shown, the collar button is secured to or formed integral with a strap or sleeve d which extends transversely around said stiffening member and may be either slidably arranged on the stiffening member or rigidly secured in the middle portion thereof. When the stifiening member has been inserted into the hollow neckband the collar button D can be passed through the rear collar button hole I), thus securing the stiffening member in place and also forming attaching means for a collar.
In order to maintain the stiffening member in proper position to give the neckband the desired shape, the ends of the stiffening member are preferably bifurcated as shown at c, the bifurcated ends being adapted to straddle the front collar button holes 6 In this manner the bifurcated edges will be securely held in place by the front collar button when the same is in place and will positively prevent the twisting or wrinkling of the neckband.
The device described is extremely simple and inexpensive to construct and forms positive means for giving the neckband of a shirt the desired shape without necessitating the use of starch in the neckband. The col-- lar button D serves the twofold purpose of holding the stiffening member in place in the neckband and also affording attaching means for a collar. By arranging the collar button on a sleeve or strap d as shown, the stiffening member is not in any way weakened by attaching the collar button thereto and the collar button may, if desired, be adjusted on the stifiening member or may be removed therefrom by sliding the sleeve d beyond the end of the stiffening member, and may be used on another stiffening member. When the collar button is inserted in the button hole, the sliding of the collar button on the stiffening member is limited by the length of the button hole, thus holding the collar button on the stiffening member and permitting the button to adjust itself in accordance with the collar and neckband. By means of the ing a projection adapted to'extend through said rear button hole for holding said stifl'ens ingi'member in its operative position and for holding said part in adjusted position on said stiffening member.
2. The combination of a hollow neckband having an opening in the rear thereof, a button hole in said neckband at said opening, a' stiffening member consisting of a strip of flexible mate-rial adapted to be inserted into said hollow neckband, a sleeve slidably mounted on said stiffening member, and a projection on said sleeve adapted to extend through said'button hole to hold said stiffening member in said neckband and to hold said sleeve on said stiffening member and forming a collar button.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the 3. The combination of a hollow neckba'nd having an opening in the rear thereof, button holes at the front of said neckband, a stiffening member adapted to be inserted into'said neckband through said opening therein and having bifurcated end portions adapted to straddle button hole insaid neckband, and a collar button adjustably secured on said stiffening member and adapted to pass through said rear button hole for holding said stiffening member in said neckband.
4:. The combination of a hollow neckband having an opening in the rear thereof, a button hole in said neckband at said opening, a stiffening member adapted to be inserted into said hollow neckband, and a collar but ton removably secured on said stifi'ening said button holes, a rear a member and adapted to be inserted through said collar button hole.
5. The combination of a hollow neckband having an opening in the rear thereof, a
button hole in said neckband at said opening, a stiffening member adapted to be inserted into said hollow neckband, a sleeve slidable lengthwise of said stiffening member and removable therefrom, and a collar button secured on said sleeve and adapted to be inserted into said collar button hole to hold said sleeve on said stifi'ening'member and to hold said stiffening member in said neckband.
