CHARLES J. GADD, 0F LEBANON, PENNSYLVANIA; ANNA EYRE GADD EXECUTRIX, OF SAID CHARLES J. GADD, DECEASED.
CLIP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 27, 191 9;
Application filed March 21, 1916. Serial No. 85,533.
To, all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES J. GADD, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Lebanon, in the county of Lebanon and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certaln new and useful Improvements in Clips, of WlllCh the following is a specification.
My invention relates .to improvements 111 means for removably securing two or more objects together and more particularly to an improved quick-acting means for removably securing together a case and its cover, a screw conveyer case and cover for instance, that has to, be more or less frequently taken down for the purpose of inspection or repairs.
Screw conveyers are made as long as 250 feet in one run and if the cover and the case be secured one to the other by screws or by bolts and nuts placed generally about four inches apart, which is the usual construction, it will be seen that much time is lost 1n removing and replacing the hundreds of these articles used whenever 1t is necessary to remove the cover to get at any trouble within the case. With either the screw or the bolt and nut methods of securing the cover and case, especially where the conveyer is used for feeding pulverized coal, orv other finely ground substance, much time to remove and replace the cover that not infrequently an entire plant has to be shut down for considerable periods to permit this.
My improved cover to the case,
fastening for securing the or for detachably securing together other things, consists of a two part clip one part being U shaped and adapted to be slipped over the parts to be secured together, and the other part consisting of a lever carried in hearings in the first part which upon being moved forward will unlock and upon being moved backward will lock the case and cover or other parts that it may hold.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in which slmilar numerals of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views, and in whichit takes so Figurel, is a perspective View of my im-- proved fastenlng or clip:
Fig. 2, a top view of the clip when closed Fig. 3, a side elevation of Fig. 2:
Fig. 4, an end elevation of Fig. 3:
Fig. 5, an end elevation of a screw conveyer case and its cover.
10 is the U shaped part of my clip. Preferably this is constructed from a length of wire sufficiently stout for the strains to which it will be subjected. At its middle this piece of wire is bent to form a bight 11 and is again bent at 12-42 so that its parts 13-13 will be substantially parallel to its parts l t-J4. At its ends it is bent to form eyes 15- 15. The lever 16 is likewise preferably formed of stout wire and at its middle is bent to form a bight 17 the wire extending from this bight forward and being, near its forward end, bent downward to form a cam 18, then upward, at 19, and then outward to form trunnions 20 which are carried in the eyes 15-15 in the stationary part of the clip.
From Fig. 3, in which part of a conveyer case and cover are shown in broken lines, it'
will be observed that when the lever 16 is moved down so as to cause the cam 18 to. close the lid 21 against the top of the case 22 that the cam 18 is off center with the fulcrum or trunnion 20 of the lever 16 hence any upward pressure on the cover 21 will tighten the grip of the cam without tending to lift lever 16.
While on account of cheapness and resiliency I prefer to construct the members of the clip of wire suitably bent, I do not desire to confine myself to the use of this material as it will be evident that other materials, malleable or steel castings, for instance, may be used.
Viewed with respect to the planes of the work to be clamped, my construction, as illustrated, embodies two pairs of parallel arms, the front pair united at the open end and the rear pair terminating in eyes within which the lever-operated cam is pinioned so that the cam projects into the space between ically locks by reason of the off-center dle to form a lever,
position of the heavier part of the cam when (4 Set J7 The front parallel arms form one jaw or member and the back parallel arms the second jaw or member of a resilient clamp, in which each of the four arms is independently resilient and which, viewed in a plane parallel to thepaperin Fig, 3, might be regarded as comprising two U;s=haped side members, each including the article clamped.
Thus the front and back clamping memmember and providing a space between the back and front members for the article clamped, in combination with a cam pivoted in the front members to project Within said space and an operatingllever forsgi cam.
2. A clip for thepurposes set forthcomprising, in combination,- a member formed from a single piece' 'of metal reversely turned at its middle'to' form a two part arm and reversely turned again to form two' arms which will be substantially parallel to one another and to the two parts 0f the,
first armand 'having'the ends" of the two arms, terminating in coaxial eyes, and a second member reversely turned at its midthen extending downwa'rdly and upwardly to form a cam" and then outwardly to formtru'n'nions adapted to be carried by Copies of'this patent may be obtaine d for and to turn the eyes found in the ends of the metal forming the first member.
3. A U-shaped clamp comprising parallel pairs of parallel arms, one pair being united at the open end of the clamp and the other pair terminating in co-aXial eyes turned away from the clamp, in combination with a wire lever having terminal trunnions fitting in the eyes and an intermediate cam extending downwardly from the trunnions toward the open end of the clamp to lie offcenter when the lever is closed, and then toward the closed end of-the clamp and there united to form the lever handle.
at. A 'U-Shzipd (-151 nip compri ing parallel arms united at the end to form one jaw and cachunited to parallel arms forming a secondjja w, the second pair ofarms terminatingin co axial eyes, in combination with a lever having parallel arms united to form a handle a id atitsoppositeend extending laterally in"the form of trunnions to fit in the eyes and"havii g a cam between the handle and ti unnionsi'.
5. Aclamp upon one end comprising parallel spacedpairs of parallel arms, the ends of armsfromopposite pairs being connected to close one end'of the clamp and the opposite' ends'of the arms or one pairbeing united, theiree ends of the otherpairtermmating in' co aiiial eyes, in combination with parallel connected arms forming a lever terniinating at their free ends in oppositely directed trunnions fitting the eyes and both bentftoward the opening in the clamp be um 11 the lever andwt runnionsto form cams w nch are off-center in theclosedposition of g gmpr p r I CHARLES; J G ADD..
